was licensed Oct. 26,
1757, by New Brunswick Presby. and the same year became
Tutor at Princeton. Dr. MacLean says of him that
it was "to the great benefit of the institution and to the
equally great satisfaction of the Trustees (he) held his office
for ten years." The Board, at a meeting on Feb'y
16, 1757, adopted a minute advising Mr. Ewen to take
charge of the Junior and Sophomore classes, "and that
Mr. Halsey apply himself to the instruction of the Senior
and Freshman classes."
It is noted in the minutes of the Trustees Oct. 1, 1767, that "Mr.Halsey, eldest Tutor of this College, now thought fit to resign hisoffice and requesting testimonials in his favor from the Trustees, it isordered, that an ample certificate be made out, to be signed by the clerkin the name of the Board and sealed with the corporation seal, certifyingthe said Mr. Halsey's faithful services and good conduct during hisTutorship in the College with Recommendation of him as a Gentleman ofGenius, Learning and Real Merit." In 1769 he was chosen professor ofMathematics and Natural Philosophy, but declined the appointment.
April 17, 1770, he was called to the pastorate of the Church at Lamingtonand was installed by the Presbytery of New Brunswick June 27. He wasappointed on a committee to draft a pastoral letter to the people May 18,1778, but dissented to its declarations of allegiance. He died "in theharness" as pastor of the Lamington Church, Oct. 2, 1780. He married in1772 a Miss Henry, who after his death married Judge John Cleves Symmes.The following is the inscription upon his tombstone in the LamingtonCemetery, "Here lies the Body of the Rev. Jeremiah Halsey who was forsome years the eldest tutor in the College of New Jersey and afterwardsPastor of this church and departed this life 2 Oct., 1780, aged nearly 47years--
