at Schenectady out of which grew Union College in 1795.
As soon as he came there he established a prayer meeting

the Louisiana Militia during the War of 1812. They appear to
have enlisted primarily for the Battle of New Orleans, in 1815,
and, according to James' pension application, served only a few
months. See: "Louisiana Soldiers in the War of 1812"; By:
Marion John Bennett Pierson; Louisiana Genealogical & Historical
Society (1963).
In the 1810 Census of Rapides Parish, La., James' age range was
listed as 26 to 44. Therefore, he was born somewhere between
1766 and 1784. That same Census showed that James' household
consisted of 1 male under age 10; 3 females under age 10; and
one female between 26 and 44. James' first child must have been
born around 1800. It would appear that John's eldest children
were several years older than James'.
