WILLIAM, the second son of William and Mary Robins Savage, was born about 1777 (according to many sources)in North Carolina. We suspect he was born in one of the coastal counties wherea number of Savages had migrated from Tidewater Virginia. There is, however,no documentation on this as yet. Biographical sketches note that he was a physician, farmer, and pioneer.
His parents moved the family to Barren Co KY sometime around the turn of the century. Britain and Elizabeth Bolling Williams, also, moved there from Rutherford Co, NC, and on 15 April 1805 their daughter,Susannah Bolling Williams and William Savage, Jr. were married.
This young couple, William's brothers and sisters and their spouses, the Delaney Bollings, the Britain Williams and the Luke Williams moved again within the next few years - this time to Missouri. William Savage, Sr., did not accompany them on thisjourney; he died in Barren Co in 1807-8.
Recorded dates are confusing; THEHISTORY OF HOWARD AND COOPER COUNTIES states that Hiram, William and Susannah'sfirst born, was also the first born child in that county. And published biographical sketches give Hiram as being born in 1806..(and in Barren Co, KY). Wedo know that William was in mid-Missouri by 1808 because he made a deposition regarding another pioneer's land.
Throughout this early history, the lives ofthe Bollings, Savages, and Williamses are entwined through inter-marriage, residency, and religion. In reference to the inter-marriages, we have not only William and Susannah as mentioned, but brother James who married Winnifred, also adaughter of Britain and Elizabeth Bolling Williams. Marriages of the variouschildren included Hiram Savage and Mary Ann, daughter of Luke Williams; Mary Williams Savage and James Williams, son of Luke Williams, and Selah Williams' marriage to William Bolling, son of Delaney.
The William Savages, Delaney Bollings, John Savages, and James Savages were among those ten families who had settled within the present limits of Cooper Co prior to the summer of 1812. Whenthe war with England commenced (the War of 1812) these settlers moved to one ofthe three Forts in the area and remained there until the end of hostilities.Life in the Fort was not easy; each Fort had been supplied with a mill and with looms. Grain and vegetables were grown as could be, either in or out of theForts; game for meat was abundant when it was feasible to venture out. Cloth was woven from the abundant supply of nettles, the stalks of which had been allowed to dry before being separated into strands and woven for summer wear. Buckskin was used for winter. A description of life there can be found in the HISTORY OF HOWARD AND COOPER COUNTIES, as well as other early histories of Missouri.
William, sons Hiram and William Bolling, and brother James, the Baptist preacher, are remembered by the Baptists as first missionaries to the wilderness.Their names are associated with the organization of a number of churches through the years: in 1810, the Loutre Island church; in 1817, the Concord Church of Cooper Co; in 1834, the Pleasant Garden Regular Predestinarian Baptist Churchof Jackson Co; and in 1841, the Crisp Prairie (Turkey Creek) Baptist Church ofpresent day Greene Co, to name but a few. The last church, Crisp Prairie, spun off four other churches, one of which is Pleasant Ridge, where many ancestorsare buried. Crisp Prairie will also figure early in the records of the Neils.(see NEIL FAMILY).
It is from the Concord Church of Cooper Co that we discover among the fourteen original members - Luke Williams, Polly Williams, William Savage, Susanna Savage, Delaney Bolen, Patsey Bollen, and Elizabeth Williams, etc., the name of Mary Savage. The latter would have been the widowed Mary Robins Savage, as William and Susannah's daughter
