11856.--Abigail Halsey, married Aaron Lindsley. From
the grandson (Charles Henry Lindsley) we learn that he
inherited, as eldest son, a large landed property at Morris
Plains, N. J. (On the records at Perth Amboy it appears
that in 1748 and 1749 two tracts, one of 668 37-100 acres
and another of 277 30-100 acres were located by Daniel
Lindsley and Joseph Coe, Jr., on both sides of the Whippany
River and on both sides the Rocksiticus road, which
were possibly these lands); that he served in the Revolutionary
war and in repelling a marauding party he was
struck on the head by a sword in the hands of a dragoon
whom he ran through the body; that he removed to Schooley's
Mountain until after the war; that he sold his lands for
Continental money and so became poor; that he removed
first to Williamsburg, Long Island, and soon after to a
tract of land about ten miles west of Ballston Spa, N. Y.;
that here he and his two sons, Aaron and Luther, erected
a saw and grist mill, store and other buildings; that
the place came to be known as Lindsley's Mills and afterwards
Milton. Here both Aaron and Abigail Lindsley
died in extreme old age (over ninety) and were buried.
Gov. William Sanford Pennington, who was a cousin of Mrs. Lindsley and anofficer of Artillery in the Rev. Army, speaks in his diary under date ofOctober 14, 1780. "Yesterday afternoon I visited Mr. Linsley's Family atHarrins (?) Planes when I recd the Disagreeable information of the Deathof my cousin the Rev. Dr. Halsey. The loss of a man of his well knowncharacter for Learning Virtue and Piety must be sensibly felt by all hisrelatives and acquaintances but it will undoubtedly inspire the mostHeartfelt sensation of sorrow in the heart of his youngest sister to whomhe acted as a parent and Brother. After sympathizing with Miss SallyHalsey on the loss of her brother & consoling her as much as was in mypower I returned this morning to camp," (near Totoway, now Paterson.)
