Abraham ESHLEMAN was born to Martin ESHLEMAN and Elizabeth GROFF in 1795,the thirteenth and last child, on a farm in Martick (Martic) Township. It was near New Providence, and now is called Providence Township. Hisparents lived about one mile north of Quarryville in Providence Township, which was a part of Martick Township in 1795. This was in LancasterCounty, Pennsylvania. Abraham had at least two children, Martin andRudolph, by a first wife. We are unable to locate her name. Rudolph wasborn 28 December 1815. Abraham married Hannah WOLFFANG/WILFFANG 26November 1816 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster,Pennsylvania. The recording of the marriage shows the name as ESCHELMAN. A son Samuelwas born, we assume, of Abraham and Hannah. A daughter Christina wasborn in Bedford County, Pennsylvania 20 May 1820, and a daughter Barbarawas born 20 July 1822. At that time, they lived at Sidehill, BedfordCounty, Pennsylvania.

It is thought Abraham and daughters came west to Illinois, CarrollCounty, about 1847. Daughter Christinals obituary states she came in1847 with her parents. Most notations in the old history state Hannahdied in Pennsylvania. The old history states Abraham came to both Iowaand Illinois. I could not find him in the census in Carroll County,Illinois. The only record I have of him is when he was a witness to apurchase of land by his son, Martin ESHELMAN in December of 1867 inCarroll County, Illinois.
You will note at birth his father went by the name of ESHLEMAN, butAbraham appears to have changed the spelling to ESHELMAN. Abraham diedin 1873 or 1874 and is thought to have been buried near Lanark, CarrollCounty, Illinois. One witness from Florida in the 1930s stated shethought he was buried in Pennsylania but this is the only differingopinion to this fact.
The old history states Abraham was a Wineberrerarin or River Brethren.could find nothing on Winebarrerarin. River Brethren was a religion manyMennonites became after several generations in the United States becauseit was a less stringent religion.
Abraham was my great great great grandfather and Hannah my step-greatgreat areat grandmother.
I accepted verbal family history from J. Wilmer Eshleman as proof.

THE COUNTY OF BLAIR
Blair County, Pennsylvania, was named for John Blair, the son of Capt.Thomas Blair, one of the pioneer settles of the area. He was one of heearliest advocates for the creation of a separate county. Abraham movedto this area from Lancaster County in the early 1800's and reamainedthere until about 1850, when he moved to Illinois.
"Two hundred years ago--l746--the territory comprising the present Countyof Blair was virgin country--primeval forest. It was then, as it is now, glorious county--a jumble of valley, streams, hills, and mountains. Herewas a forward peak where one could see for miles and miles, here a seriesof mountains, each mountain a brother to the next. Here were silentforest glades, mountain meadows through which rushed a thousand creeks, waterfalls and roaring streams. It was matchless country ... (BlairCounty's First Hundred Years 1846-1946 by the Blair County HistoricalSociety)
In 1754 a treaty was signed which allowed settlers to purchase land.Within the next 20 to 30 years, counties were formed which eventuallywere subdivided to form Blair County; Bedford County was formed in 1771,and Huntingdon County was formed in 1787. Frankstown Township wascreated in 1775; at that time this township included all of the presentday Blair County and some townships that today are still a part ofHuntingdon County. On February 26, 1846, the County of Blair was formedfrom parts of Bedford and Huntingdon Counties. Many of the firstsettlers came from eastern Pennsylvania and Maryland, while others camedirectly from Europe.
Towns in existence at this time included: Hollidaysburg, Williamsburg,Martinsburg, Newry, East Freedom, Claysburg, and Collinsville. Altoonawas not in existence until 1849. Principal industries of the areaincluded agriculture, transportation, and iron mining and smelting. Itwas the transportation industry which created Altoona. The PennsylvaniaRailroad was searching for a site for its repair shops, selecting theRobeson farm in Logan Valley; this eventually became the site of theworld's largest railroad repair shops.
Altoona
As the canal was dying as a major form of transportation, the railroadwas rising to its dominant position. By 1846, the PRR had their trackscompleted to Altoona, and by 1850 they were extending westward. Aspreviously mentioned, the first small railroad shops were built on thesite of the David Robeson farm. The town at this point had no name, andthe suggestion was made to name it after Altona in Germany, the site ofthe first railroad shop in the world. The extra "o" was added to thename for the sake of individuality. The growth and development of thetown was tied to the expansion of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Martinsburg and Morrison's Cove
Organized in April 1839, Martinsburg was originally in the northern partof Bedford County, thus explaining the name of its parent Township, NorthWoodbury Township (even though it is located in the southern part ofBlair County.)
