[377] Christina Eshelman was born 3 May 1820 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania toAbraham Eshelman and HannahWolfgang. She came to Carroll County,Illinois with her parents in 1847. Other research stated the Mother haddied in Pennysivania. Christina married John Laird in 1849.

When the 1870 census was taken it was stated John Laird had real estateproperty valued at $36,650.00 and Personal property valued at $3000.Johnwas eligible to vote. Sons William R., John and James were shown asfarm laborer's. John, age 18; James age 18; Sarah Ann age 16; Amelia age13 and Joseph age 9 were shown as being in school. Most of the malechildren attended during the winter season only and helped with thefarming the rest of the year.

In the 1930's and 1940's, J. Wilmer Eshleman and Dr. Fayette Eshleman didconsiderable research on the Eshleman families in Lancaster County inPennsylvania. They recorded this name as Sarah, but had the fact thatshe married John Laird. After doing considerable research in CarrollCounty in Illinois, I have come to the conclusion they erred in Sarah, and the name was really Christina.

From the history of Carroll County, Illinois, portraits of earlysettlers, "John Laird, retired farmer, Lanark, born in Ohio in 1817, cameto this County in 1837 and now owns 950 acres. He married for his firstwife, Elizabeth B. Beatty, who was born in Pennsylvania, and the-y hadtwo children. John married Christina Eshelman in 1847 and they had sixchildren."

From the Orbituary from the Lanark Gazette, of 6 April 1904.
"Christina Eshelman was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania 3 May 1820.She removed with her parents to Carroll County, Illinois in 1847. In1849 she was married to John Laird, with whom she lived in delightfulunion until his death in 1892. To them were born six children, four sonsand two daughters. One son, Abrahm, died at the age of eighteen monthsand one daughter, Annie Harwood, died in 1885. Three sons, John, Jamesand Joseph and one daughter, Amelia, survive her. Her son James reachedhere from Nebraska in time for the services, but John was unable to makethe long journey from Washington to be present. Mrs. Laird lived in thiscommunity continuously since her removal from Pennsylvania in 1847.

In the early days, she united with the Brethren Church at Arnold'sGrove. Upon the organization of that church in Lanark, she became one ofthe charter members and remained a consistent and devoted member untilher translation to the church triumphant 30 March 1904, age 83 years, 10months, and 27 days. The funeral services were held on Saturday, the 2inst. at the residence of her daughter, Amelia, with who she had made herhome for several years past. The services were under the direction ofRev. I. B. Trout, pastor of the Brethren Church of which she was amember. Revs. D. Rowland of this city and A. C. Wakeman of Chicago alsospoke at the services, the former having known her from his boyhood, andthe latter in response to the expressed wish of the deceased.

Few members of this community could be removed whose loss would be morekeenly felt or more generally deplored. For several years, her health habeen gradually failing, and many times she occupied her place in churchwhen her appearance indicated that one less devoted would have remainedat home.

Her remains were deposited in the family lot in our beautiful cemetery toawait the resurrection morn:

Servant of God, well done: Thy glorious warfare's past.
The battles fought, the race is won, and thou art crowned at last."

Christina and John were buried at the Lanark City Cemetery at Lanark,Carroll County, Illinois.
