MARTIN ESHELMAN AND ELIZABETH STONER
Martin ESHELMAN was born 15 August 1811 in Lancaster County, PennsylvaniatoAbram ESHELMAN. Martin was the oldest child. We were unable to findthename of Martin's mother. His stepmother was Hannah WOLFFANG/WILFFANG,and she married Abraham 26 November 1816 at the Trinity LutheranChurch in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. There was at least one brother,Rudolph, born of the first marriage also.
Elizabeth STONER was born 12 September 1817 in Morrison's Cove,Martinsburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania to Abrham STONER and BarbaraRHODES. Her parents were early settlers of Morrison's Cove in Bedfordand Blair Counties in Pennsylvania. They came fromLancasterCounty,Pa.about 1812. They resided on the original STONER farmstead on the PineyCreek Road a short distance north of Martinsburg, Blair County,Pennsylvania. Elizabeth was the second in a family of ten children.
Elizabeth's cousin, Mary STONER, married Rudolph ESHELMAN, brother ofMartin. Rudolph and family also went to Illinois, then on to Missouri, and back toHancock County, Illinois.
In 1850, Martin and Elizabeth were living in Martinsburg Borough in NorthWoodberry Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania, and Martin at age 38 wasa wagon maker. They had four children at that time. In 1840, 1843, and1845, they lived in Blair County, Pennsylvania. In 1848, they were inBedford County. By 18SO, they were back in Blair County. In 1851, sonDavid was born in Pennsylvania.
Martin and Elizabeth came west to Carroll County in 1852 with the oldestfive children. I was unable to locate them in the 1860 census in CarrollCounty, but Christian was born in 1854 and Nancy in 1857 in CarrollCounty, Nancy at Streator, Illinois.
In May of 1863, Martin and Elizabeth ESHELMAN bought 80 acres of landfrom Jacob BENJAMIN in Rock Creek Township in Carroll County for $1,100,about $14.00 an acre. In December 1867, Martin ESHELMAN and Elizabethpurchased land for $1,800; no legal description of the land was given.Abraham ESHELMAN, father of Martin, witnessed the transaction. InDecember of 1869, Martin mortgaged to John RAHN this land in the amountof $1,100.
In the 1870 census of Carroll County (post office address of Brookville,Ogle County), Martin and Elizabeth had four children living with them.Martin was a farmer. It shows Martin had $10,000 real estate propertyand Personal property worth $1,148. In addition, daughter Sarah nnsadeand son-in-law Andrew KINGERY and their two small children lived withthem. The census records show David at age 18, Christian at age 16, andNancy at age 13 as being in school. It also shows David and Christian asworking on the farm. Son Joseph was a day laborer.
Martin died 11 November 1871 at the age of 60 years and is buried atDunkard Church Cemetery, Shannon Township, Carroll County, Illinois. Some of the children had alrady gone on to Iowa, but they returned toIllinois during Martin's illness.
Martin died without a will, but the probate records show ElizabethESHELMAN and James R. HOWELL, a brother-in-law, were appointedadministrators of the estate. The papers show Martin had about 180 acresof land valued at $45.00 an acre, or $8,100. He had personal propertyvalued at about $1,250, including the livestock. I have included theprobate records, including the inventory of the estate. I don't knowwhat happened to the value of the estate. In the final accounting, theestate came to $1,190.58. The Court had paid out $1,385.05. WidowElizabeth paid out of her own funds the difference.
Elizabeth lived with Lide and Leonard WEAVER in Noble Township, CassCounty. In the Martin Eshelman-Elizabeth Stoner family Bible, owned byVera Eshelman, Elizabeth is shown as dying in Noble Township 5 April1896. The only record of her burial was shown in the cemetery surveydone in the 1930s by the WPA, evidently using old cemetery records. Thiswas found six or seven years ago in the records of the Iowa GenealogicalSociety Library in Des Moines. When the Cass County Geneaiogical Societydid their cemetery survey in the late 1970s or early 1980s, they readfrom the tombstones and have no record of this burial. The tombstone iswith son Joseph and wife Julia; small stone just shows Mother. I haveincluded a picture in the book of my niece holding back a bush thatcovered it. In the WPA records found, her name isn't shown, but correctbirth and death date is 1817-1896. I did not have the 1880 censuschecked for Lide and Leonard Weaver, as a descendant was able to sendtheir family group sheet. I had the census record for 1880 checked forJoseph and Julia and Abraham and Mary, and they are the only others whocontinued to live in Noble Township and Elizabeth wasn't with them. Allthe 1890 census records were destroyed by fire, so 1880 was the only yearthat could have been checked.
