Barbara Eshelman was born 20 July 1822 at Sidehill, Bedford County,Pennsylvania, to Abraham Eshelman and Hannah Wolffang/Wilffang. Oninformation of the obituary of her sister, it states they moved toCarroll County, Illinois in 1847 with their parents. Other informationstates that the mother of the family had died in Pennsylvania.
Barbara married James R. Howell 1 March 1847. When the 1870 census wastaken in Carroll County, they had real estate valued at $9,000 andpersonal property valued at $2,200. They are listed as being the nextneighbor to her sister Christina and John Laird.
From the Carroll County Directory published in 1878, Portraits of EarlySettlers: "Barbara married James R. Howell I March 1849. Barbara andJames had six children: Abrahm G, Thomas, Hannah, Isaac, Charles, andJoseph. Their children Thomas F. and Hannah S. were the first whitechildren born in Rock Creek Township where the city of Lanark nowstands. In 1878, James R. Howell lived on Section 35, Freedom Township,P.O. Lanark, and owned 102 acres of land in this county valued at $70 peracre; 160 acres in Iowa valued at $10 per acre. James R. Howell was bornin Hagarstown, Washington County, Maryland 21 July 1823 and came to thiscounty in the fall of 1845. James enlisted in the 71st I.V.I. 9 July1862 and was discharged 29 October 1862, having served his time ofenlistment in the Civil War. James R. was a democrat and a ChristianBaptist."
From the obituary of James Riley Howell in the 30 May 1888 LanarkGazette: "James Riley Howell, born Hagerstown, Maryland, 10 July 1823 anddied at his home in Freedom, Illinois 29 May 1888 in his 65th year. Hisyouth and early manhood were spent in his native state,and in the year1845, at the age of 22, he came to Carroll, Illinois. On 1 March 1849,he was married to Miss Barbara Eshelman. Six children blessed thisunion: Abrahm, Thomas, Hannah, Isaac, and Joseph, who with the wiferemain to mourn the loss of husband and father. His son Charlespreceeded him to better land in childhood. In 1862 he enlisted in hiscountry's call in Company C 71st Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Thedeceased possessed a wonderful memory, a keen perception, and on allgeneral subjects none were better posted than he. His ideal as to whatconstituted true manhood was by no means on a low plane. He admired thegood and true, and his hand was always outstretched to help the needy andunfortunate. His life was such that when he felt its close was near athand, he could say he had no fears of the death hour, for he was ready togo. Thus, another pioneer of Carroll County, Illinois has died in thehope of immortality. Funeral services were held this forenoon at thelate home of the deceased,and the remains were interred in FreedomCemetery."
Barbara Eshelman Howell died 27 September 1895 at the age of 73 years atLanark, Carroll, Illinois. Both are listed as being buried in the LanarkCity Cemetery in Caroll County, Illinois. It is not known if the body ofJames was moved or if the name of the cemetery changed. James R. Howellwas 39 years old when he enrolled in the Civil War. He was 5' 7" tall,had black hair, brown eyes, dark complexion, was a married farmer. Hejoined and enrolled at Lanarck, Illinois by Justice of the Peace OfficerBurnside. He was mustered in at Chicago,Illinois and held the rank ofcorporal. He was in Company B, Seventy-first Infantry, IllinoisVolunteers.
In the early part of the Civil War, they thought it was going to be ashort war, and they allowed three-month enlistments. Then you could bedischarged as having done your duty. James R. Howell served from 9 July1862 to 29 October 1862, and that finished his service.

Barbara Eshelman married James R. Howell on 1 March 1849 at the Church ofChrist at Mt. Carroll, Illinois in Carroll County, copy of theCertificate of Marriage in the National Archives.
James enlisted in the service on 22 July 1962, joining at LanarkIllinois, and was discharged 29 October 1862. James had the rank of acorporal while in service. He was mustered out of service at Chicago,Illinois. James was absent, sick on furlough for 20 days from 8 August1862, and this was extended 20 days. James was sent home on furlough dueto disease contacted in service, was unfit for service. He wasdischarged and was unable to return to active work achedule due to thediseases contacted in service, was all but totally disabled the rest ofhis life. James R. Howell applied for a pension 25 May 1882 and wasgranted a pension. The amount isn't shown.
James died 29 May 1888 of complications of these diseases contacted inservice. Barbara Eshelman Howell applied for a pension 20 August 1888and 18 March 1889. The application is signed with her mark, so she wasunable to read or write. Barbara had been given a pension of $12.00 amonth, was dropped from the pension rolls due to her death 29 September1895. It states she was dropped from the rolls on 9 March 1897.
