Rudolph Eshelman and Mary Stoner
Rudolph Eshelman was born 28 December 1815 at Martinsburg, Blair County,Pennsylvania to Abraham Eshelman. We did not find the name of the firstwife of Abraham, he remarried to Hannah Wolffang (Wilffang) in 1816. Itappears possible Abraham's first wife and Rudolph's Mother died inchildbirth. Mary Stoner was born 5 May 1821 in Martinsburg Burrough,Blair County, Pennsylvania to Jacob Stoner and Barbara Bassler (Basler/Bossler). It shows Jacob Stoner and Barbara Bassler were early settlersof Morrison's Cove. In 1850, Rudolph and Mary lived in MartinsburgBurrough, Blair County, Pennsylvania, and Rudolph worked as a founder. They had four children living, one had died.
Mary Stoner's cousin, Elizabeth Stoner, married Rudolph's older brother,Martin Eshelman.
Sometime between 1850 and 1855, the Rudolph Eshelman family migrated tonorthern Illinois, probably Carroll County or Ogle County. Their sonAndrew was born in 1855 in Illinois. Their oldest daughter, Sarah Ann,married John R. Grimes and they resided in Carroll County, Lima township,
Illinois.
Then Rudolph and Mary and all their children except Sarah Ann moved on toDavies County, Missouri, sometime before 1858, as son John was born nearGallatin, Missouri in Davies County on 28 December 1858. They continuedto live in Davies County in 1860 when the census was taken. Rudolph wasa farmer with assets of $300. Rudolph and Mary and family returned toIllinois sometime after 1860 and settled just north of the town of PilotGrove in Durham township, Hancock County on a farm belonging to Mary(probably through an inheritance as records show it came from her mother,Barbara Stoner). They lived there in 1865 in the census records. Therecords just show the transfer of land, they don't show if purchased orgiven as an inheritance. Rudolph and Mary lived there until theirdeaths. The farm was about a mile north of the town of Pilot Grove, andthe house they lived in is still standing.
The orbituary of Rudolph Eshelman from the Burnside Missouri city, in theCarthage Missouri Republican, 2 September 1874:
"Mr. Rudolph Eshelman, whom we mentioned some weeks ago as havingattempted to shoot himself, committed suicide by hanging himself to ajoist in his shop or grain house sometime in the forenoon today. Thecircumstances surrounding this affair, as near as we can get them areabout as follows: Mr. Eshelman was a native of Pennsylvania and was about60 years of age. He became possessed of the farm on which he lived atthe time of this occurrence, by his marriage. At times he was slightlyaddicted to intemperance. Of late has been quite abusive, causing hisfamily, of whom there are several. to flee to the.neighbors.for safety. They were absent at the time of this occurrence, probably at some oftheir relatives, when he was found by a daughter of Mr. Walters, who wassent to his house on an errand. Mr. N. S. Cheney and Mr. Grimes weresoon on the ground after the discoveryand cut the body down, but life hadbeen extinct for some hours. The general character of Mr. Eshelmanappeared to be that of a quiet, inoffensive citizen. He visited thehomes of some of his neighbors of late and narrated some of his familytroubles. Not wishing to mix in family difficulties little regard waspaid to him.
The date of his death was 1 September 1874.
The family legend as told to descendants of Rudolph have a differentversion of the suicide. Legend has it that son, Andy, was the drinker, but Mary accused Rudolph when she found bottles under the porch, and sheharangued and nagged him until he finally committed suicide.
Rudolph and Mary are buried in Pilot Grove Cemetary, 2 1/2 milesnortheast of Burnside, where a single stone gives Rudolph's name, date ofbirth and death on one side, and Mary's name, date of birth and death onthe other.
When the railroad came through, residents of Pilot Grove moved toBurnside, leaving only the cemetery to mark its existence. Some ofRudolph's and Mary's children, are also buried at Pilot Grove.
