Peetermans---------Peterman
The Belgian spelling of the above name is Peeterman....(Note
research on the internet tell of no sirname from Belgium with
that spelling, but does show Peeters). After arrival in La. the
spelling of the name was changed to Peterman, perhaps a tendency
to spell the name as pronounced. The spelling was never legally
changed.
The first of the Belgian immigrants to come to Alexandria, and
Elmer, La., were two brothers John Louis and John (Joan) Joseph
Peeterman, who came to Alexandria and Elmer, La. in 1835. They
were brothers of Francis Peeterman, whose whife was Ursula Vits,
and was the first of the Peeterman-VanRillaer descendents to
settle in La.
In Oct 1870, John Louis Peterman (Peeterman) made a visit back
to Belgium, and persuaded John Francis & Ursula Vits Peterman,
and their children, Isabella and John Francis Jr., to come to
La. John Ferdinand Peterman, son of Francis and Barbara
VanRillaer Peterman, came back at the same time. He was
unmarried, later married Mary VanHoof. While in Belgium, John
Francis Peterman worked as a carpenter and farming a two acre
plot; and by the standard of their time, was a good acreage.
In Belgium in those days, their wre three class of people,
namely, Royalty, Middle Class, and Peasants. The middle class
were people who owned land, regardless how small the acreage.
Joan Joseph and John Louis Peeterman settled in Alexandria, and
Elmer, La., In those days, it took a month to cross the Atlantic
by ship. In 1903 when John Francis and Ursula Vits Peterman made
a visit to Belgium, sailing time was two weeks). The immigrants
landed at Ellis Island, NY, over land to the Mississippi River,
thence by boat to New Orleans or in their case because of Yellow
Fever in New Orleans, they entered the Red River where it
entered the Mississippi.
Upon arrival in Alexandria, La. John Francis and Ursula Vits
Peterman lived with his uncle and aunt Joan Joseph Peeterman and
his wife Melonie Vandegaer Peetermans, for one year until his
homestead of 160 acres, came through. The homestead was in
Elmer, La. During the year of 1870, John Francis Peterman
helped his uncles, with carpentry work in and around
Alexxandria, La. During that year, John Francis and his uncles,
built a twenty foot log cabin on the homestead in Elmer. His
bachelor uncle J. Louis Peeterman, made his home with them until
his death. John Joseph, Ursula Vits Peterman and family lived in
the log cabin while they built a nice large home. For a long
time after the had built their home, the cabin was used for a
kitchen. For some reason early Belgians built their kitchens
away from the main house. When John Francis built his home on
Bayou Rapides, Alexandria, La. he also built the kitchen about
ten feet from the main house, but connected it with an enclosed
walkway.
Joan Joseph & John Louis occupation was carpentry. Joan Joseph
worked in Alexandria, and John Louis would go from place to
place doing carpentry work. He worked in Boyce, La., and for the
owners of the surrounding plantations, where and experienced
carpenter was much in demand. He also worked in Cheneyville, La.
While doing carpentry work, he lived with the people for whom he
worked. Between jobs, he would return to Elmer, where he made
his home with John Francis and Ursula Vits Peterman. Their home
in Elmer Louisiana still stands. It is now the Turnage Place.
Joan Joseph and Melonie Vandegaer Peeterman and John Louis were
among the numerous Belgians buried in St. Peter's Catholic
Mission Cemetery, Elmer, La. Graves unmarked.
Joan Joseph & Melonie Vandegaer Peeterman owned a home and
property fronting on fourth street Alexandria, La., across the
street from the present St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cathedral.
Joannes Franciscusanglicized name is John Francis.
