John Francis and Ursula Vits Peterman sold the 160 acres, which
they had homesteadedin Elmer, La. and bought 100 acres of open
farm land on Bayou Rapides and 83 1/2 acres of woodland, bought
land in 1890.
All the early Belgians who purchased timberland did so, in order
that they would have fuel for cookstove and fireplace. In those
days all fuel was wood. While living in Elmer, La. the Belgians
only transportation was by ox wagon. To make a trip to
Alexandria, La. for supplies, would take several days. Therefore
each family would buy groceries such as flour, rice, sugar, by
the barrel. All families raised corn and had it ground locally
at a grist mill for corn meal. Also all raised sugar cane and
had it made into syrup at a local syrup mill.
When a new Belgian family would move into the area, all the
settlers would get together and help build a home and clear the
land for them. Clearing the land was called log rolling. Also
the ladies of the community would help each other make quilts,
which was called a quilting bee. Fun was had by all.
John Francis Peterman given name in Belgium as Joannes
Franciscus Peetermans
