St. Peter's Catholic Church in Elmer, La. was the first Mission
Church of St Francis Xavier Cathedral Parish, in Alexandria, La.
The mission church was established because of the great number
of Catholics in that area. Not far from the Belgian settlement,
was a settlement consisting mostly of Spanish-Indian (Mexican)
who were Catholic. These people all worked in a nearby sawmill.
A great number of them were buried in the St. Peter's Catholic
Cemetery. Graves unmarked.
The Parish priest traveled from Alexandria, La. to Elmer, La. by
horseback. He would spend the night in the home of one of the
parishioners, in order to celebrate Mass for them the next
morning. The Mass was usually celebrated once a month, on a
weekday.
The people of Belgium are chiefly of two ethnic stocks, the
Fleming (Teutonic origin), and the Walloon (Celtic Origin,
probably with a mixture of Alpine elements). The flemings like
the neighboring Dutch, are fair complexion, Belgians resemble
the dark haired French. The predominately Flemish providences
are Antwerp, West Flanders, East Flanders, and Limburg. The
providence of Hainaut, Liege, Luxembourg, and Namur are largely
Walloon country.
John Francis Peterman was blue eyed and fair complexion, his
wife was dark eyed and dark haired. They both spoke the Flemish
language.
John Cornelius VanGossem was blue eyed and fair complexion. His
wife was dark eyed and dark haired. She was a Walloon, but they
both spoke the Flemish language, as did all the early Belgians
who settled in Elmer and Hineston La.
