He remember George and Mrs. Washington visiting his home after the revolution as a child. Moved to NY after marriage, then to IN, and IL, and back to IN. Chicago was just a small trading station. 7 children. On April 4, 1844, he led 20 family members
covering 3 generations in 7 covered wagons with horse and cattle to OR. Supplies were laid up months in advance. There 1500 people in the 1844 migration on the Oregon Trail, but the perkins group traveled with only a few others for a total of 19
wagons. He was the oldest member in the group. 4 men were lost for 2 days when they went buffalo hunting. There was heavy rains and floods, disease, and injuries. 7 Sager children were orphaned, and Sally and other young mothers took turns nursing
the orphaned infant. There were hostile indians in KS and a scary river crossing at North Platte. The entered the Blue mountains in nov 1844, in snow. They arrived at the mission of Marcus Whitman, who asked them to winter their to make some repairs.
The whitmans took in the Sager children. Eli selected a site on the Yamhill river a few miles upstream from its' mouth on the Williamette. His son Joel founded the town of Lafayette. By 1850 lafayette had 800 people, portland only 6-700.
