[93201] While on the Oregon trail, an indian stole a horse from the group. john road a horse bareback into the indian camp, cut the saddle strap on the horse, pushed the indian off, and rode out with the horse. John stayed on at the Whitman mission to help
them for 5 years. Took a land claim 45 miles west of the lower Williamette, far up North yamhill. one mile north west was Pike, just forming. This country had been the domain of a small subtribe of the fierce klickitat indians, whose chief Wyonoshut
had met Lewis and Clark in 1805 and converted to christianity and kept his tribe from the fighting of 55-56. John left the family in 1848 for 9 months for the california gold rush. He did well. He returned to prominent farmer, millwright, horse
breeder, financier. He and his father built the first gristmill in 1850, with a lumber mill, a mile upriver from Pike. wheat had been legal tender since 1845. He eventually had 2900 acres. He invested in first Woolen mills in oregon city. County
commissioner and trustee of Yamhill school. He had 9 children. He was jumped by an indian who shot him with a bow and arrow while in the CA gold mines, he made obscene gestures and jumped around him until he picked up his flintlock and killed him.
His oxen yoke, used on the OR trail, is in the Oregon historical society museum. served 3 months in the indian war under Captain AP Ankeny and Colonel Thomas Cornelius. a clan ancestor Captain AJ Hembree was killed in the Yakima Indian Wars of 1856
when his mule balked. He had fuilt the first telegraph line from Lafayette to Portland. He had 10 children. he had double hernias later in life.
