next door. She grew up to become Mary Pickford. founded bank in 1902. Bought out siblings who all equally inherited father's land. Raised durham cattle, percheron horses, and cotswold sheep. he never learned to swim, but would sometimes ride logs
downriver to mills. he used modern scientific farming techniques. He built a new ranch home to replace the old log cabin. accused of participating in a vigilante hanging when young- part of a huge gathering of men who hung the husband who shot his
wife who was Norris' wife's sister. he wsa charged 4 years later but the charges were dropped. threw a schoolmaster out the window at age 15 for whipping a small boy. he went home and said he was never going back. became first mayor of yamhill, when
it's name changed in 1908. He tore down the old house and built a new one in 1919, with the family's first indoor privy. once when a group of farmhands were terrorizing the town getting drunk and riding through it shooting guns, he sent the deputy out
to warn them, and when they chased him back into town, he pulled a rope up across the street, bringing them down into the dust. a neighbor was bragging too much about his horse, so he bet $100 on his own, hired a professional trainer, and won. He had
an excellent sheepdog named Bob. he bought a cadillac in 1911. He never got the hang of it and his daughter Beryl drove it mostly, a 6 passenger open touring car. once when he was trying to take the car out of the yard, it turned the wrong way. he
wasn't sure how to fix it so he hitched up a team of horses to drag it over. he kept mental count of his fields, and recorded every cent he spent. had 7 children, 6 girls. traded horses and "the meanest mule that ever lived" for a surrey from Liet.
Ulysses Grant, who was stationed at Vancouver barracks in 1853. It was said to be used by his soldiers when they had to drive him back to the barracks when he was passed out drunk. He used it for 35 years to take the children back and forth to the
school in pike. in 1929, he used $90,000 of his own money to maintain his bank out of consideration of his friends and neighbors. it was the only one in oregon that did not close. when a small boy, he was minding a cousin vie. he dropped her on her
head at the hearth. he felt responsible for her epilepsy all his life. Late in life he wanted to know why Jim's hands had no calluses. he was told he was in medical school, and accepted it. a ram butted him sideways, which severly damaged his knees,
and in later life he used a cane. he was bowlegged from a life on horseback. He never drank, but often made wine in his basement for family and friends. He had a goiter in his neck that interfered with his breathing and made it 18 inches around. He
had prostrate surgery in his 70's and blamed his deafness on it, although it is unlikely. he was lonely after his wife died. retired at age 88, he never stopped farm work. he would sign old frontier songs to himself. His last words to Norris as he
left for the war were "Norris, I think you are going to have trouble with that man Hitler."
