He laid out and named lafayette after lafayette indiana. He circulated a petition to get it named county seat, which it was signed in as in 1846 by Gov. Abernathy. went to Ca gold rush in 1849. married wife when he was 29 and she 14. He established
first ferry on Rogue River in 1851. He built the first house, and housed the Rogue indian chief to keep in good with the indians. it was a 450 mi round trip to lafayette for supplies. Went with wife and young daughter to Los Angeles in 1855, when it
was spanish held. His son was born there. With a friend, John Malone, they gathered and drove 49 horses and mules north. they were in the siskiyous mountains when Malone got drunk, shot joel, and smashed his skull in with the rifle barrel. He later
hanged himself with his chains in the Jacksonville jail. a motive was never discovered. Laura was pregnant again at his death. she later remarried and raised another family.
