parish of Clisden, County Somerset, England, laborer, and Timothy
Hatherly of the parish of St. Olave, County Surrey, feltmaker, bound
Irish as a servant to Hatherly for five years at Plymouth, New England;
besides board and lodging, Irish was to receive 5 pounds per annum and at
the expiration of his term of service was to receive twenty-five acres of
land and twelve bushels of wheat (Bristol County, Mass. LR 2:120).
Willis and Stella Irish, Descendants of John Irish, The Immigrant,
1629-1963, and Allied Families (Freeport, Maine, 1964), a good, though
not sufficiently documented family history, on p. 11 assumes that John
Irish arrived on the Talbot, which is reasonable, since that ship was
known to be carrying servants for Plymouth. In 1634 at Kennebec, he was
one of the four men sent by John Howland to cut the moorings of Hocking's
boat at the time when Moses Talbot was killed (MD 2:11). In 1637 he was
one of the volunteers in the war against the Pequots (PCR 1:61). Moving
to Duxbury, Irish and Henry Wallis made a covenant that the survivor of
them would get the other's five acres of land by Stony Brook in Duxbury;
in 1641 the court gave him, as survivor, such land (PCR 2:12-13).
Duxbury town records of 1639 show that the people of Duxbury promised
William Hiller and George Pollard certain concessions for setting up a
grist mill on Stony Brook, and one concession was to "do our best
endeavours to procure the lands of John Irish and Henry Wallis," offering
them an exchange elsewhere, or to give Hiller and Pollard 6 pounds toward
the purchase of same (PCR 12:73). On 11 June 1641 John Irish gave his
ten acres at Stony Brook to Hiller and Pollard for Hiller's house and
garden lot (PCR 12:74). On 5 March 1643/44 the court ordered that John
Irish was to have his twenty-five acres of land, due for his service,
made up by Duxbury men, for it had been agreed that such servants
promised land by covenant would have it provided for by the towns where
they lived (PCR 2:69).
Apparently Irish did not get the land in Duxbury, and on 29 September
1658 the court ordered that John Irish of Duxbury could search out land
according to his indenture, with Constant Southworth to help him find it
(PCR 3:149). His name was on the 1662 list of former servants and
ancient freemen to be granted land at Saconett Neck (PCR 4:18). There is
no record that he ever became a freeman of Plymouth Colony. Although no
will was found, the court on 5 March 1677/78 ordered a division of the
land owned by John Irish, deceased, at Saconett, which he had
"bequeathed" to his two sons, John, Jr. and Elias (PCR 5:252); however,
from the same court records it appears that son Elias had died earlier,
for on 30 October 1677 William Witherell of Taunton (Elias's wife
Dorothy's father) was given the administration of his estate (PCR 5:247),
and it is the same William Witherell who was given the divided share of
Elias, who is called William Witherell's "child." John Irish, Jr. became
constable in Middleborough in 1672, and in Saconett in 1678 (PCR 5:91,
265). The Irish family history states that John, Sr. married Elizabeth
Risley ca. 1640, but the authority for her surname is not known. That
his wife's name was Elizabeth is shown by a deed of 7 December 1659
whereby John Irish of Duxbury, roper, sold Guydo Bayley land in
Bridgewater (MD 14:91). The Irish family history has John Irish, Jr.
marrying (1) Elizabeth Savory and (2) Priscilla (Southworth) widow of
Samuel Talbot and daughter of Edward and Mary (Pabodie Southworth of
Duxbury; a clue toward finding contemporary support for the marriage to
Priscilla Southworth may come from Mrs. Charles L. Alden, "Alden
Genealogy," NEHGR 54:181, where she states that on or about 17 February
1719/20 Col. Benjamin Church "went on a vis
