VanGossums--------VanGossem---------VanGossen
In Belgium, the above name was spelled VanGossums. The spelling
of the name was never legally changed; gradually began to be
spelled or written VanGossem or VanGossen in Louisiana. My
family always spelled it VanGossem.
John Cornelius and Elizabeth Alaerts VanGossums
John Cornelius and Elizabeth Alaerts VanGossums were the first
immigrants of the Alaerts-VanGossums family to come to the
United States and settle in Louisiana.
They came in the autumn of 1881, by way of Ellis Island, New
York, thence by boat to New Orleans and Alexandria, La. On
arrival in Louisiana they went to Hineston, La. to live, on what
was known as Peggy Place. While living in Hineston, La., John
Cornelius VanGossums's occupation was farming.
Later they moved to Many, La., where he made his lving by
farming and brick masonery. They owned several acres of land in
Many, La.
In 1900, they sold their property in Many, La., and bought
twenty-eight and half acres of land at Alexandria, La. After
this property is now located Alexandria City Park Zoo, the City
Swimming pool, and the Park Place Subdivision.
John Cornelius Van Gossums's occupation in Alexandria was
farming until his retirement. While in Belgium he was a brick
masonery.
All of the children were born in Belgium with the exception of
Joseph (Jeff). Frank Van Gossem was seven years of age when they
came to La.
Above information from my mother, Mary Martha Peterman VanGossem
Wagner.
Compiler: Mrs. Leighton Davis Miller Sr. Theresa Ursula
VanGossem Feb 29, 1968 3223 Peach St. Alexandria, La.
Immigrated to USA -- Rapides Parish, Louisiana in September1881
with his wife and children except Joseph, who was born in the
USA. He and his family resided three years in Hineston,
Louisiana. In 1884 he and his family moved to Many, Louisiana
and in 1898 he and his family moved to Alexandria, Louisiana
where he resided until his death. At the time of his death he
was survived by four daughters, Mrs. J. Lemmens (Marie Louise),
Mrs. A. Van Hoof (Mathida), Mrs. W. B. Perry (Evronie), and Mrs.
V. Michiels (Barbara) and one son Mr. Joseph Van Gossen. He had
38 grandchildren and forty great-grand children. The above
information taken from his obituary in the Alexandria Daily Town
Talk.
His anglicized name is John Cornelius.
