The following is taken from "Libby Family in America 1602-1882" by Charles T. Libby
"The IMMIGRANT" JOHN LIBBY
(By descent number convention has no number, or is zero (0)), b. abt. 1602 in Cornwall, England; d. 1682; m. 1st ? , and 2nd Mary ? . In July 1677 he stated that he had 'come to this land 47 yeares agoe', which would mean that he immigrated
in 1630. (A better estimate of his arrival is 1637, after his first son was born in England). He sent for his wife and eldest son in 1640. He was a constable in Scarborough in 1664 and his name was first of four selectmen in 1669. From the diary of
Capt. Joshua Scottow, 'Sept 7, 1675, the enemy burnt those houses and barnes our Capne saved the day before, they burnt also 8 or 9 deserted houses belonging to Libby and children'. John Libby and children were in Boston July 10, 1677, where he
petitioned the Governor to discharge his two sons from the garrison at Black Point so that they may help the family. Two other sons, James and Samuel had died at Black Point and Boston respectively, resulting from wounds suffered in 'Phillips War'.
The petition was granted, and Henry and Anthony were released from duty. He died at Black Point (Scarborough) at about eighty years of age. In his will, dated Feb. 9, 1682, he gave 'unto my Children five Shillings Apeace, to every one of them and to
my two youngest sons, Matthew and Daniel, fifty Shillings out of ye Estate, when they come of age, and my wife shall have it all to her disposing to Mantayn the children'. In the will the inventory mentioned only the real estate at Black Point; 100
acres of upland, 9 acres of fresh meadow and 100 acres of salt marsh. John Libby's children were:
1) John b. 27 Apr 1636 in England, m. Agnes ? .
2) James b. abt. 1638; d. 1677
3) Samuel b. abt. 1640; d. 09 July 1677
4) Joanna b. abt 1643; m. Thomas Bickford
5) Henry b. 1647; d. 21 Oct 1732; m. abt. 1686 Honor Hinkson
6) Anthony b. 1649; d. 1718; m. 1st Sarah Drake, 2nd Jane Rackley
7) Rebecca b. abt. 1651; d. aft. 1732; m. abt. 1684 Joshua Brown
8) Sarah b. abt. 1653; d. aft. Jan 1728/29; m. Robert Tidy
9) Hannah b. abt. 1655; d. before 1755; m. abt. 1684 Daniel Fogg
10) David b. 1657; d. bef. 24 Dec 1736; m. Eleanor ?
11) Matthew b. abt. 1663; d. Mar. 1740/41; m. Elizabeth Brown
12) Daniel b. abt. 1664; m. Mary Ashton
Note: A footnote on page 25, suggests that there may have been two other daughters.
Of course the Libby Books are FULL of information about these children and their descendants, this was the beginning
