[Brderbund WFT Vol. 22, Ed. 1, Tree #2912, Dateof Import: 14 Feb 1999]
SAMUEL NEIL (Grandpa Sam) was born 16 Oct 1844 in Jackson Township, Polk Co, MO, the second child of Nelson and Margaret Jane Savage Neil. He was raised in Morgan Township, Dade Co, leaving there at age 18 toenlist in the Union Army. His military records show him to have been 5'6" in height, of fair complexion, with blue eyes and light hair.
That record notesthat he was a volunteer, enrolled on 6 March 1862 to serve "three years or during the war...discharged 5 Mar 1865 at St. Louis, Missouri, by reason of expiration of term of service." It further carries the information that he was, when enrolled, by occupation a farmer.
He served as a Private in Co. D, 8th Missouri State Militia Cavalry, and was to receive, in later years, a pension for that service.
Sam's application for a pension provided valuable information tofamily historians; it lists where the family lived, who his brothers and sisters were (supposedly in chronological order), and, (most important), who his parents were, which added a generation to our records And because of his mother'sdescent from the Bollings, we wonder if perhaps that "B." in his name was in recognition of his Bolling ancestors. It has appeared only three times (once inhis marriage certificate, once in the Census, and once as his father's Executor at the time of the sale of the Estate); in no instance is the middle name disclosed.
On 14 Oct 1866 Samuel married Amanda Jane Tygart, daughter of JamesCoy and Sarah Griffin Tygart. "Mandy" had been left an orphan near the beginning of the Civil War, and had been mother to her four younger siblings. (see the TYGART FAMILY)
Sam and Mandy lived in Aldrich, MO, in their later years; asnapshot shows the two of them outside the house - Grandpa Sam with a long, white beard, Grandma Mandy a tiny wizened figure...and the remembrance is that she made wonderful cookies. It is also remembered that Grandpa Sam was a person of some importance in the town of Aldrich.
Samuel was, as has been noted above,a farmer, owning land in both Dade Co and Polk Co, MO. His Obituary carried in the Bolivar Free Press on 19 Nov 1931 reads:
"Samuel Neil, a pioneer of the Aldrich community and a Civil War veteran, passed away Sunday night after a long illness at the age of 87. He died within a few miles of the place he was born.
"A short funeral service was conducted in the home, followed by the regular service of Pleasant Ridge Church at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning, preached by T. A. Phillips, a former pastor, after which the body was laid to rest in thePleasant Ridge Cemetery.
"Samuel Neil was born October 16, 1844; departed this life November 15, 1931, being at the time of his death 87 years and 29 daysof age.
"He professed faith in Christ at the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church nearDadeville where he was baptised and united with the church.
He enlisted in the Union Army, Co. D, and served throughout the Civil War.
"He was married toAmanda J. Tygart at the age of 21 years. To this union was born five children- Pryor, Annie, James, Joe, and Fannie. He leaves to mourn his departure twosons, James and Joe; two brothers, William Neil of West Plains, and Nelson Neilof Atwater, CA; and one sister, Mrs. J. Y. Box of Aldrich, MO. His wife, twodaughters, and one son preceded him in death.
"Mr. Neil retired from farmingabout 20 years ago and moved to Aldrich. He was one of Polk County's most prominent citizens. His personality will be remembered by all who know him. T.H.P."
Amanda's Obituary is carried in the section on the TYGART FAMILY.
She died12 Nov 1928 at Aldrich; he followed three years later on 15 Nov 1931. They were buried side by side at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Polk Co, MO.
