Notes for Jean Baptiste Aymond II:
Jean II's St. Paul marriage record shows that his earlier civil
marriage was blessed by the Church on March 19, 1824 at the home
of his parents. Jean I was deceased by that time. That 1824
record states that Jean II was born on Bayou Bouef, but that he
was living in the Bayou Rouge area of Avoyelles. Jean II
claimed land at Pointe Maigre. "Biographical & Historical
Memoirs" p. 606. Church records seem to conflict over whether
Jean II was a resident of Rapides or Avoyelles Parish, leading
to the belief that he must have lived near the parish line.
Also, it appears that his marriage to Catherine Bellgarde was a
civil marriage conducted in Rapides Parish, as there is no
record of it in Avoyelles. By this time, the Bellgard family
was located in the Holloway - Deville areas of Rapides Parish.
Louise Deville was Basile's godmother. Basile's St. Paul
baptism records (under the name "Hamon") also state that Jean
was a land and slave owner in Rapides Parish. This tends to
support the theory that Jean Baptiste Aymond I actually began
our Aymond family near the Avoyelles - Rapides Parish line
(between Deville and Effie), and that it was from the Pointe
Maigre area that the family eventually spread throughout
Avoyelles Parish. In 1813, Jean II owned land on Long Prairie
in Point Maigre. "American State Papers; Vol 3; p. 213". His
adjoining neighbor was Jacob Hooter, who for a time rented his
land to Jean II's brother, Pierre. As Jean I and Jean II seemed
to both reside on or near the prairies of Rapides and Avoyelles
Parishes, it seems likely that they were primarily in the
cattle business. Long Prairie is located North of Highway 107,
West of Highway 115 and westward toward the Hopewell Cemetary,
in Ward 1 of Avoyelles Parish. Additionally, the 1820 census
lists him as a slave owner. In 1813, Jean II testified on
behalf of Charles McKernon, as to the fact that McKernon land,
purchased from Alexandria merchant, Milling Wooley, was obtained
by Wooley as a Spanish land grant in 1798. This land was at the
site of a ferry located on the road from Alexandria to
Marksville and which crossed the Red River. Jean II was said to
be 25 years of age at that time. "American State Papers; Vol.
3", p. 134. Also in 1814, Jean Aymond II and his
brother-in-law, John Reed, farmed land in Pointe Maigre which
had been obtained by Louis Pomier about 1800, and which they had
farmed since about 1802. Jean II and John Reed each obtained
640 acres, and John Reed lived on it beginning in 1807.
"American State Papers; Vol. 3; p. 214". Jean II's brothers,
Etienne and Michel, each claimed 640 acres on Bayou du Lac in
Avoyelles Parish in 1813. "American State Papers; Vol. 3; p.
231".
It appears that the first generations of the AYMOND family in
Avoyelles Parish moved around a good bit before finally settling
down. One person on the Avoyelles Parish GENWEB site on the
Internet, wrote that the Hardtimes Plantation, just South of
Alexandria on Highway 71 (and currently owned by the Theus
family) had been passed down though Aymond-Dauzat-Snoddy
families prior to the Civil War. Although I have never been
able to confirm this (due to the Yankee burning of Alexandria
and its courthouse in 1864) these family names would make Jean
Baptiste Aymond and his first wife the likely founders of that
Plantation, if that story is true. The Hardtimes Plantation
main house was burned down by the Yankee troops during the War
for Southern Independence, and a new one was built after the
War. The Theus family now lives in the home. It appears that
the Aymond-Dauzat-Snoddy family no longer owned that plantation
after the War.
