There is tradition not positivelyauthenticated that he was the son of Captain William Saltmarsh whocommanded the ship "Larke: of the Royal Navy". The old English origin andrepute line is also from this.
From the Winifred Saltmarsh Raines collection:
Thomas Saltmarsh family in Gen. & Family Hist. of the State of N.H. byEzra S. Stearns p. 1713. Error in the records suggest that Capt. ThomasSaltmarsh was the son of Capt. Wm. "Saltmarsh" of the "Larke" and"Jersey" of the English Royal Navy. Capt. Wm. Tollemach (other spellingsalso) was not our ancestor, though he was an interesting character. Hewas unmarried, he d. in the Indies and his mother, the Duchess ofLauderdale inherited his estate. This info. from THE SCOTS PEERAGE Vol.III David Douglas 1906.

Notes for THOMAS SALTMARSH:
Of London. l Thomas Saltmarsh is said to have been Captain of a merchantship, or according to another tradition, a Captain in the Royal Navy. Thesurname was probably derived from the parish of Saltmarsh on the RiverHull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. He settled first in Charlestown, and in 1734 in Watertown, where he was an inn-keeper many years. He wasConstable in 1743, and Assessor, 1741, 1742, and 1745.
In History of Antrim genealogies, it lists Isaac as the sone of Thomasand Betsey Abbott, but as grandson of *William* Saltmarsh.
From Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1st ed. Filby and Meyer (atNHSL):

The General Armory of England Scotland Ireland and Wales (Sir BernardBurke) states for Saltmarshe:

Saltmarsh , or Salsomarisco (Stonby, co. Lincoln, and Upton, co.Warwick). Ar. crusily gu. three cinquefoils of the last.

Saltmarshe (Saltmarshe, Co. York, an ancient family of that co.). Ar.semee of crosses crosslet three cinquefoils gu. pierced of the first.Crest-A rudder or. Motto-Ad astra virtus
In Suffolk Surnames (Bowditch), there is this puzzling entry "Mr Mountainwrote in 1800; Mr. Saltmarshe, in 1639." There are no references to whathe wrote but apparently we might assume he was in Suffolk Co. at the time.
