In an e-mail from Annette DeCourcy Towler ([email protected])dated 10/16/99 she says:
>From Doug Hanke, "I was looking through my new 2nd Edition of the"Descendants of Edward Howell..." and I noticed where this shows thatthe 1st wife of Silas Howell was Hannah HOWELL rather than HannahWHITE. Hannah Howell was born about 1749 to Elisha & Mary (Howell)Howell. He married 2nd Hannah VAUGHN. 9 children are shown for the 1stmarriage and 5 for the 2nd marriage which match your notes." THISINFORMATION IS WRONG, see the pension record below.
And I hope I don't sound to defensive, but in the 2nd edition copy ofEdward Howell by Emma Ross there was mistakes also, as all of thefamilies were not listed, and my husbands was one of them. All of myinformation is directly from the published book of the Combined
Registers of Morristown Presbyterian Church 1742-1889. Pension filesfrom National Archives, in Washington DC. Also family information washanded down and reprinted by my husband's great grandfather SilasHowell Towler and his older brother Rev. Thomas Towler's handwritteninformation. Silas lived from 1846 to 1930 and I have all of histyped notes from his research. The handwritten copies of the rest ofthe information was dated 1879. Silas Howell Towler's mother was JaneWhite Howell and her father was Silas White Howell, whose father &mother was Silas Howell and Hannah White of Morristown NJ. WHITE hasbeen carried down a couple of generations in this family.
Since John Howell is not the direct line and I have not researched itother than to take what someone else had done and put together,probably Emma Ross. But here is where I got the information. Evenwith a question mark.
In the Combined Registers First Church Morristown, NJ on page 111,states
Howell Charles
Deborah
with a combined sign and indented under neath these names are fourchildrens names of
Ruth;
John; B. 9 Nov. 1755; (? m. Phebe Farrand)
Samuel ; B 15 Nov 1757
Mary; b. 28 July 1759; B. f. wid. 14 Oct 1759
interpretation: B. = Baptized
b. = born
L. = leave the congregation
f. = do not know
R. = Received
C. = Confirmed
d = died
aet = age
There are four Silas Howell's listed in this registry, This family ispage 112
Howell, Silas, Capt.: R. C. 28 Aug 1768 ; C. 4 Nov 1774
Hannah R. C. 28 Aug 1768. C. 4 Nov 1774 d. 25April 1785, aet 36
Hannah (in italics) R. C. 2 July 1786 (assume is the secondwife)
Hannah; B 28 Aug 1786 (a misprint of year???? but the pensionrecords say b. 16 July 1768)
Silas White; b. 22 Feb 1770; B. 25 March 1770: (? m. 13 Nov 1792Hannah Arnold, dg Col. Jacob) (This information is correct)
I also have Major Silas Howell's application for refusing the pensionfor serving in the Am Rev War and it states with the list of the restof the family that he "was married to Hannah WHITE Sept 10, 1767".The date on this pension is 9 June 1855 and was found in Silas's son,Stephen Howell's files in the National Archives at Washington DC. Shedied 10 days after the second Child named Charles was born. Withthis information, I can argue that Major Silas Howell did marry HannahWHITE and family resources say she was the daughter of Capt. JacobWHITE.
As you see I sent this to the list also. Others may ask the samequestion. I guess I have to say, the resources were not properlychecked. I personally have a hard time with published informationlike the Combined Registers of First Church, Morristown, NJ but withthe two
families that I am researching there FAIRCHILD and HOWELL, and theinformation in this book has not steered me in the wrong directionyet. Has been a good starting point. I also have visited thegenealogy library that is directly connected to the Washingtonheadquarters, in Morristown NJ (spent one afternoon there) which wasthe FORD House and related to the ARNOLD family. There I also gotconfirmation that Silas had married Hannah WHITE. Also from thepension record, I noticed that Silas is the only child with a middlename and his is WHITE. Which is a naming convention for children inthe family.
Thanks again for bringing this to my attention. I did not know therewas a new addition out. Too bad, as this family was missed in thelast edition.
