The following was written by Anna Pauline Neil Owens, the only daughter of Roy and LouTreacy Shuler Neil. She has agreed that we may share it with you:
"ROY ALVA NEIL, the eldest of four sons, was born on February 20, 1890, to Prior Lee and Susan Cowan Neil. In his active days PriorLee was a well-known livestock dealer, and Roy A. inherited his love of handling cattle.
"In spite of this interest he attended Southwest Baptist College at Bolivar and State Teachers' College in Springfield, evidently with the intention of making teaching his profession. Pictures of Dunegan School show he wasteaching there in 1912. Following that he taught at Pleasant Ridge School, just across the road from Pleasant Ridge Church and Cemetery where so many of theNeil relatives and ancestors are buried.
"Roy A. and Treacy Shuler, whom hemarried on July 25, 1912, lived on the farm that Treacy's parents had homesteaded. Since Roy was busy teaching school, Uncle Rob Neil helped on the farm. After a few years, Roy A. sold the farm to Uncle George Shuler and bought a grocery store in Aldrich.
"Living in Aldrich, Roy and Treacy operated the store for five years. But his love of farming surfaced and he sold the store and bought a farm just at the south end of Aldrich. Then, with three little children and another on the way, he needed a regular pay check. He began working at Andrew Hensley's produce. Andrew was elderly and Roy A. eventually bought the business.
"Farming was more or less relegated to Tommy Cowden, the hired hand, however, Roy and the children had a marvelous garden in a fertile spot near a slough from Sac River. Also the children were shown how to plant cornfield beans around the corn in the cornfield. Surprisingly, Father did not reprimand the children when innumerable bean vines came up around one corn stalk.
"That lovely convenient farm was sold, and one across Rocky Ford (properly named) was purchased. After living in various houses in town for a few years, Roy A. boughtthe big house where he and Treacy had another baby, reared their children, andlived the rest of their lives. This home was purchased from the Andrew Hensleyfamily, the same Andrew who had originally owned the produce.
"Still interested in livestock and farming, Roy A. had some very good early renters on the farm across Rocky Ford. These young families were almost like relatives to us.But in later years, Roy let one man batch there just to have somebody in the house.
"When the farm was flourishing, Roy made frequent trips to supervise the work and check the hogs, horses, sheep, and cattle. Sometimes he took motherless lambs to the Neil house in town tobottle feed them - even a young goat wastaken to town. Billy Goat was hastily sent back to eat the sprouts on the farm when he ate his way through the screen door to the kitchen. Another animal brought to town was a burro which moved at a speed so slow that the Neil daughter could ride it. So the farm affected the life of the family though they never lived there.
"Being a rather astute business man, Roy A. also purchased some land immediately west of town on Sac River. He rented out some of the pasture and used some to graze his own cattle. Roy A. became ill about the time land was being bought for Stockton Lake, and it became evident the lake would take some of his land, all of which bordered Sac River. Some of his family at first thought that Roy was just grieving over losing his land, instead of being really ill.
"One of my most vivid memories of this period was the time I wentwith him and Treacy to put out blocks of salt for the cattle west of the river.Right over that rough, rocky pasture and down the hill towards the river that old Chevy went, and those beautiful steers began coming toward the car, whichthey evidently recognized.
"Also I remember t
