John Bowman who fought in the Revolutionary War. John was a Rev. War Vet. He and his wife were both dead before 1832 so unfortunately neither lived long enough to apply for the pension....
John BOWMAN (b. before 1775 PA? - d. 1821-1822 Athens OH) moved to Athens Co., OH around 1805 from Carmichael, Cumberland Twp., Greene Co., PA. His wife's name is not yetknown but John married her sometime around 1790 and she died between 1803-1820,probably in Ohio. According to items found in his will inventory, it appearsJohn was a carpenter and owned a chairmaking business. His son, Henry N. D., apparently continued that trade after his father's death.
One record about settlers to Alexander "Southtown" in Athens County referred to Isaac Brooks and an"Esquire Bowman", but it is not known if that was John. John served on grand juries in Athens County in April 1811, September 1814 and June 1815. On 25 June1817, the Athens County commissioners approved a resolution allowing the superintending committee "to employ John Bowman to paint the roof, cupola, etc. of the courthouse."
His will was written on 5 August 1821 and he died a short timelater. He gave John Jr. the west third of his plantation in Alexander Twp. and use of the orchard. He wanted the other two-thirds to be equally divided between Henry N. D. and Israel, with Israel also getting a 34-acre tract of land in Greene Co. PA along Muddy Creek in Cumberland Twp. He gave his daughter, Eleanor, one-sixth of an acre in Carmichael, Greene Co., PA. He gave Jabez his wagon.
