EDWARD HOWELL FAMILY ASSOCIATION:
In the 1683 rate list, Richard Howell was assessed at fifty pounds.Between 1683 and 1709, his father, Richard Howell, Sr., gave hisconsiderable property: "three acres of my home lot" on 20 May 1683; "20acres of land west of Southampton at Head of the Creek" on 20 May 1683,"a fifty pound right of commonage through Southampton bounds" on 8 June1687, "two parcels of land at yet Great Plaines" on 4 August 1698, and"the home lot joining to his home lot as well make them both equal, and anumber of lots elsewhere" on 2 April 1709. In 1694, he was chosen atrustee. In the 1698 census, Richard appears with his wife Sarah, sonsHezekiah, Edward, Obadiah and Christopher, and daughters Dorcas, Sarah,and Abigail, residing as neighbors of his parents. He was assessed atthirty pounds in the 1700 estimate. The Parish Rate for 1736 assessed forRichard Howell and son for 40 pounds, 5 shillings and 5 pence. The willof Richard Howell, dated 25 March 1737, devised:
"to my wife Sarah, my best bed and furniture, and 1/3 of the movables,and the use of 1/3 of all my lands, and all the east room of my house,and the chamber above it, and 1/2 the leanto, and the liberty of my wellto draw water; to my eldest son, Edward Howell, 5 shillings, he havingreceived his portion; to my son, Christopher, 5 shillings, he having hadhis portion; to my grand-daughter, Esther Howell, 5 shillings, her fatherhaving received his portion; to my son, Arthur Howell, 5 shillings, hehaving received his portion; to my grand-daughter, Sarah Rose, 5shillings, her mother having received her portion; to my daughter DorcasNorris, five pounds; to my daughter Abigail Pierson, twenty pounds; to myson Obadiah Howell (whom I make executor), all my lands, meadows, andtenements, and 1/2 a fifty pound right of Commonage throughout the town,besides 1/2 of a fifty pound right in Quogue Purchase, and all the restof my estate. " The will was proved 28 June 1740. 66
Richard Howell resided in the village of Southampton, at the South End,on the east side of Main Street.
