He was raised Protestant. He made only a token protest at the execution of his mother. He had a brutal childhood but was a fairly able ruler. He had a lifelong obsession with witchcraft. His tenure as King of Scotland was marked by the protestant
dilemma- presbyterianism, supported by knox's calvinist movement that led the church had power over state and the right to meet as self chosen groups to rule, and episcopalianism, supported by the king, which appointed bishops, who kept seperate from
state affairs. Upon Elizabeth's death, he left for london. He would return to Scotland only once. He used the term Great Britain whenever he could, and created the Union Jack, a new state flag. He wished for the joining of the two countries. He
pursued a policy of Fire and Sword by Pen to subdue the highlands, playing the clans off one another. He captured their leaders by pretense and forced them to sign a peace agreement. He continued to push episcopal practices, carried on by his son
Charles I. the turmoil this created led to the development of the Covenanters, people who declared that divine right of kings null to their religious right to interpret themselves, and so the era of cromwell began, that led to Charles' execution.
