In the 1860 census of Washington County, Arkansas, Joseph was a three
year oldchild in the household of his parents. He was the youngest child
in the family. By the 1870 census, his parents were both dead. In that
census, he was listed as living in Crawford County, Arkansas with his
sister, Martha Seratt Rush.
Joseph and Phoebe owned land in Washington County, Arkansas, but moved to
Sequoyah County, Oklahoma (then Indian Territory), before Statehood.
