John Seratt was a bell maker, by trade. During the Civil War, the John
Serattfamily was living in Crawford County, Arkansas. Supplies came into
the area by boat. John left the house to get money so he could buy
supplies thenext day. He never returned home. Later in the spring, while
planting corn, his body was found, minus a leg. Nobody knows what
happened to him. Later his leg was found and also buried. It is believed
that John is buried in an old cemetery back in the mountains. The area is
still remote and the roads unpaved. How must it have been in 1861?!
