moved to Boston and could be considered the first real casualty of the Rev. War. He was the second man shot, but the first to die at the Boston Massacre of March 5, 1770. It seems that Sam and a British private named Kilroy got into a brawl earlier

in the day at the ropemaker shop where Sam worked. The private asked for work and was told "Yes, you can go clean out my shit house". He apparently didn't see the humor in the statement but being smart enough to realize he was outnumbered went back to
the barracks ; got some friends and returned. According to Hiller B. Zobel in his book "The Boston Massacre" he states: A private named Mathew Kilroy fought notably, but so did Samuel Gray a ropemaker. Later that night at the site of the Massacre; Sam
was standing beside a man named Langford right after the first shot was fired at Crispas Atticus. Together they watched as Kilroy raised his weapon. " Goddamn you, Don't Fire!" screamed Langford. Without aiming Kilroy fired. Sam Gray , his hands in
his jacket pockets spun around and fell on Langford's left foot. John Hickling ran to help Sam ; feeling through the gushing blood in the wound Hickling found a hole in Gray's head, "As big as my hand." It is said a group of friends brought Sam's
body to Dr. Lorings in Cornhill; but the door was locked so somewhat carelessly, they left him there.
