Edward DOTY
[92627]
____ - ____
Family 1
: Faith CLARKE
The ancestry of Edward Doty is not known. He was a servant of Steven
Hopkins, and was said to be of London. The Mormon's International
Genealogical Index says Edward Doty was born in Shropshire, England
c1599, but this record is fictitious.
Charles Banks notes a marriage of an Edward Dowty and Wynifryd Waryner,
12 December 1613, in St. Mary-le-Strand, London. This is probably not the
Edward of the Mayflower for a couple of reasons. First, if Edward was
born around 1599, he would have only been 14 at the time of the marriage.
Second, Edward was a servant and servants weren't usually married. Third,
Edward didn't re-marry until 1634, yet if this was his first wife she
clearly died before 1620. Fourteen years without remarrying, in those
days, would have been quite an unusually long time period.
Another possible clue is a Thomas Dowghty who was married four years
later. Edward named one of his sons Thomas, so perhaps this is a
relative--a brother, cousin, or possibly his father re-marrying.
Edward Doty is recorded as a contentious man, often in trouble with the
law. On 18 June 1621 he fought with Edward Leister in what would become
the colonies first and only duel. Neither were seriously injured, and
both were subsequently punished. During his life, he would be charged
with various crimes, including trespassing, assault and battery, and
breaking the peace (MFIP Doty, p. 2).

__________
DOTY, EDWARD - Edward Doty arrived at Plymouth on the 1620 Mayflower as a
servant to Stephen Hopkins, but he probably completed his term of service
by the 1627 cattle division in which he shared. For which purpose he was
assigned to the company not of Hopkins (as would have been expected if he
were still a member of Hopkins's household) but of John Howland. He had
earlier fought a duel with sourds with another Hopkins servant, Edward
Leister, for which both were sentenced to be tied neck to heels; Hopkins
successfully pleaded to have the punishment end after one hour (this
story has appeared with much embellishment from time to time, but the
earliest, most authentic version seems to be from Prince, Chronokocal
History). He was on the original 1633 freeman list. On 2 January
1632/33 John Washburn sued Doty for wrongfully taking a hog from him, but
the court found Washburn's case to be faulty and dismissed it; on the
same day Joseph Rogers complained that Doty did not comply. with a
contract where he owed Rogers six young pigs, and Rogers was awarded four
bushels of corn; and also on the same day William Bennett complained
against Doty for various injuries, and the matter was referred to the
council for resolution (PCR 1:6-7). The last case was resolved on I
April 1633 when a jury found Doty guilty of slandering Bennett by
calling,, him a rogue, and Doty was fined fifty shillings, thirty to
Bennett and twenty to the court (PCR 1:12). On 2 January 1633/34 John
Smith, who had bound himself as an apprentice to Doty for ten years,
complained to the Court that Doty had disbursed but little for him; the
court ruled Smith should continue being bound enough time to make a total
of five years, after which Doty would have to give him double apparel,
and "so be free of each other" (PCR 1:23). On 24 March 1633/34 Doty was
fined six shillings, eight pence for fighting with Josias Cooke and
drawing blood, an required also to pay Cooke three shillings four pence
(PCR 1:26). Or 28 March 1634 Doty sued Francis Sprague and was awarded
six shilling six pence and half a peck of malt (PCR 1:29).
On 6 January 1634/35 Doty married Faith Clarke (PCR 1:32), daughter
of Thurston (or Tristram) Clarke; on 4 December 1637 Edward Doty and
Tristram Clake "his father in law" were to view land for a grant to them,
(PCR 1:69). On 22 August 1636 Peter T
