According to John Quigley (posted to internet):
The Uvalde County book "A Proud Heritage: printed in 1976 had this to say about John Bowles: "born in Virginia on 16 Feb 1802, lived in Tennessee with his parent for a while. Then went to Mississippi, married Millis C. Pate. They had six sons and seven daughters. In 1849 he moved to Texas with his family, settled in Bell County, and helped to organize the country in 1851. He then went to California and joined his son J. Frank Bowles for some mining. In 1855 he returned to "The States" and sent for his family, settling in Uvalde County. He settled first in the Patterson Settlement, about 4 miles south of the town of Sabinal. He engaged in Cattle raising and other stock. He assisted in organization of Uvalde County in 1856, and was one of the Commissioners selected to choose a site for the County seat. He was killed in 1859 by Indians who stole his horse. His body was buried in Patterson Cemetery. The children born to John and his wife were: Adeline - m. Dr. Kilgore; Hiram; J. Frank; Caroline - m. a Mr. McDowell; Fannie - m. a Mr. Townsend; Emma - m. Joe Brown; Greenville, a cattleman, known as "Pete"; David C. of Bell County; Jane, m. a Townsend; W. B. "Doke"' Mariah Elizabeth (Lizzie) m. George Washington Patterson Jr. (he was 18 she 15).
According to Sally Etebari (posted to the internet)
In the book "A Proud Heritage" under the Uvalde County Government section is the following:
"John Bowles and W. S. B. Owens were justices of the peace in 1854 for the County of Uvalde. 'All of these men had been among the first to settle in the county, and all were Indian fighters: some of them were subsequently to play the leading roles in tragedies of the frontier. Distinctive among them was John Bowles, who in an age and locality where profanity was a substantial part of every man's vocabulary, earned the pseudonym of "Hog-my-Cats" by his substitution of that phrase for the virle oaths of the pioneers."
According to Kathy Cunningham (posted to the internet on Wed, 24 Mar 1999)
John Bowles was killed by Indians in 1859 in Uvalde.
It is also reported that John Bowles is mentioned in the book "Texas Indian Fighters" by A. J. Sowell
