1 The surname of Lutz seems to have arisen at an early date in the upper Rhine country and present-day Switzerland, especiallyin the canton of Zurich. A Michael Lutz is mentioned in 1433, and a Barthalomew in 1485. Among the Palatinate peoples who immigrated to the U.S. in the 1700's were many who bore the name and took their oaths of allegiance and of naturalization. Some settled permanently in Pennsylvania, while others soon scatteredinto Maryland, Virginia and the carolinas. Often the foreign-born immigrants remained behind and it was their children who pushed on to the frontier areas ofthe country. It is interesting that the Germanic naming scheme required that the oldest son be named for the paternal grandfather and the second son be namedfor the maternal grandfather.
