John Howell, the subject of this sketch, was a friend and companion ofJudge Sayre in the new settlement of Shingle Kill or Cairo. He was agreat-grandson of Edward Howell, the founder of the town of Southampton,Long Island, and came to this county in 1794. He bought a farm at Acraand then built the old Howell homestead which is now standing. The farmwas Lot No. 48 in VanBergen's Patent, and was bounded on the east by theline which separated VanBergen's Patent from the patent of James Barker.The old house is on the east side of the road from Acra to Centreville,about a mile and a half from the former place, and is now owned byGeorge Simpson. The larger part of the farm is on the west side of theroad. Mr. Howell was the founder of the first church in Acra which wasbuilt in 1795. His wife was Mehitabel, and their children were: Charles,who married Jerutha Judd and died a few years since without children;Matilda, wife of Jeremiah White; Lucretia, who married Frederick Kortzand had two children, Maria, wife of John Taylor, and Adelaide, wife ofRichard B. Taylor, now living in Kansas; John, who married MarySaltmarsh, and had a son Frederick (a late well known citizen ofSouthampton, Long Island, whose son William F. Howell is a prominentlawyer at Corydon, Iowa), and other children whose descendants are invarious parts of this State. A tombstone in Acra burying ground has thefollowing inscription; "In memory of John Howell who died April 4th 1815,aged 71."His wife, Mehetible, died January 3rd 1818, aged 81. His sonJohn, died March 12th 1835, aged 66. His daughter, Matilda White, died1863, aged 88.
