Enrolled in Company F, 26 regiment. He was a private of Company A in the 33 Kentucky Infantry. The 26th Infantry wasorganized at Calhoun, Kentucky in the fall of 1861. It participated in the battle of Shiloh and saw heavy loss in killed or wounded. In June of 1862 it movedto Florence and later to Athens Alabama. In March 1864 the 26 regiment mergedwith the 33 Kentucky Infantry. John was a private in the war.
In locating Civil War records I found that his brother James Newton has wrote to John's commanding officer asking him if he could send John home. This letter was dated Oct.25 1864 and Hiram died on Oct. 26 1864. It appears that John did not make it,even though the note shows that he was given permission to go back to BowlingGreen. These records also show that upon leaving the Union army, John owed 25cents for a lost gun sling.
