Diver Recovers Body form Chill Water Early Today
Memorial day tragedy repeated Monday at North Sterling reservoir.Early today a professional diver,
veteran of naval service, took from the chill water of the big lake the body of Ronald N. Carwin,
who drowned early Monday evening when four fishermen were plunged into the water as their rowboat
suddenly capsized. Carwin,40, was a blacksmith and farmer at Iliff. He is survived by his wife and five children. Of the other three members of the party, John Cunningham swam to safety and Roy Gregory and Abe Barba clung to the overturned boat until
they were rescued by Harry Sturbaum, in another boat.
Naval Veteran Aids
Recovery of the body was made by Robert R. Carson,33, a veteran of naval service who did diving from alaska to islands of the South Pacific during the recent war. Carson, learning of the tragedy, volunteered to Sheriff E.M. Brown to assist in efforts
to recover the body. Using a mask of his own, air hose purchased at a Sterling store, and a tank of compressed air owned by the Sterling fire department. Carson dived into the lake six times before coming upon the body. He returned to the surface, from
the
final dive, bleeding at the nose. The body was found in approximately 25 feet of water, but Carson had worked in water up to 40 feet in depth. The tragedy occurred near the south end of the reservoirs dam. Carson who recently has come to Sterling, is
associated with the Firestone company as brake repairman. No coherent explanation of the Accident could be obtained from the three survivors, Sheriff Brown said today. The three survivors stated that they had gone to the reservoir to fish, late Monday
afternoon, and that at the time of the accident they were not more than 150 feet from the shore. The water was calm, when suddenly the boat capsized, Cunningham told the sheriff. Cunningham and Carwin started to swim to the shore.
Search Starts Monday
When I reached the shore, Cunningham said,"my legs seemed paralysed. Looking back, I saw "Brick"
( as friends knew Carwin ) thrashing in the water and calling for help. I went back into the water but was too exhausted to reach "Brick". Carwin was known to friends as a capable swimmer. It was considered possible that heavy clothing which he wore
impeded his action, or that he was overcome by cramps in the cold water. The accident occured about 6:30 o'clock Monday evening.
The search for the body was started Monday evening but abandoned at dark, at the suggestion of Carson, who stated that he would be better able to work in the water if mud at the bottom had not been disturped.
Early this morning Carson boarded a boat manned by George Boyer, Homer Anderson and Dee Jennson and headed for a buoy which was dropped following the search conducted Monday evening.Another small boat manned by Jeff Gibbs and Deputy Sheriff Larry
Clemen accompanied the Boyer craft to the body.
Cunningham Joins Search
Carson went over the side for the first time at 6 o'clock. Equipped with an oxygen mask, hose and line and apparatus from the Sterling fire department, the diver started his careful search of the area. Twice he was forced to return to shore to get warm
after the cold and pressure became unbearable. During the final trip out, about 7:30 o'clock. Cunningham directed the party to the area at which he believed he saw Carwin go down.
Father of Five
Carson went over the side and after several minutes gave four short tugs at the line. He was immedately hauled to the surface, bearing Carwin's body. Carwin was born July 28, 1908 in Wray and was the son of William and Viola Banister Carwin. He came to
Logan county with his parents at an early age and in 1919 resided in the Iliff community.
He married Dorothy Davis and made his livelihood as a farmer and blacksmith.Mr. Carwin is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Davis Carwin of Iliff four daughters Shirley 11, Peggy 9, Judy 3 and Sandra Kay 3 months and a son Billy 5 all of Iliff, two
brothers, James G. Carwin of La Jara, Colo. and Donald B. Carwin of Proctor and a sister, Mrs. Ina McGee of Peetz.
