[44699] A couple of years ago a man came through Kaufman County, Texas with an old letter written by a woman detailing the death of Hampton Byrd and two of his daughters on New Years Day, 1884. They were poisoned, a man was arrested, later the man was hung. I'd be very interested in hearing from anyone who may know about this letter, or the hanging.

I think we are looking for the same Hampton Byrd. My grandmother who recently passed away on December 3, 1998, was Faye Ellen Cousins. Grandma's parents were William Lon Erwin and Irie Lonie Byrd. Irie's parents were Samuel Elem Byrd and Mary Raney. Sam's father was Hampton Byrd. As you can see from the other posting on Hampton Byrd, there appear to be two Hampton Byrd's whose lives were similiar. Our Hampton Byrd married Jane Peel on January 1, 1846 in Independence Co., Arkansas. On the 1850 Cenus for Arkansas (which is on line) it shows Hampton was 29 and born in MO. Jane was 25 and Harriet was 4 and born in Arkansas. It also shows a William Byrd who was one. I know that Harriet Elizabeth Byrdmarried Eligah Hendrick, and that they had two children from what my grandmother told me. There names were Roy and Mildred.

The rest of Hampton and Jane'skids were: Richard Flint, born 1853, and married Feb. 22, 1883 to TA Benton; Thomas W. born 1856 and married Ada Daniels; Samuel Elem or Elmer born 1859, married Mary etta Raney June 22, 1884, and died December 18, 1925; John W. born 1864 and married Neomi; and Jane Erie born 1868, married Eli M. Gray and died August 3, 1903. I have also found the land record were Hampton purchased land in Arkanas in 1855 (that too you can find on line). Hampton, Jane and their kids moved to Texas at some point. They lived in Kaufman County, Texas. Mary Belle Clay who is a cousin has done a lot of research on the Byrd family and has shareda great deal with me. While my grandma was alive she told me what she could remember. She was always told that Hampton Byrd's father was a Cherokee Indian Chief. Someone in the family thought his name was Judge Adam Byrd, but neither I nor Mary Belle have been able to prove it.
