Description
A long-shore, public barrier beach south of Boston facing the open ocean waters of Massachusetts Bay.

Major features
Clean, clear water; long sandy beach;, ocean panoramas; often battered by storms.

MDC Programs
Services both city and suburban populations; has massive summer crowds; generally empty during winter; site of many summer time special events with seasonal concerts at music pavilion.

Directions
Hull USGS quadrangle: From Route 3A take Summer Street from Hingham Rotary to Washington Boulevard to Nantasket Beach. Public transit via the #220 Bus from the MBTA's Red Line to Hingham Center then the Andre Coachline bus to Hull.

SITE

Setting
Nantasket Beach offers a classic public beach/shoreside location with open ocean to east; rock outcrops to the south; beachside shops, arcades, etc to west and a sandy strand stretching off to the north.

Terrain
The reservation includes over 4000 feet of long, sandy, sloping barrier beach bordered by sections of concrete seawalls backed by a seaside promenade and parking lots. Some rocky sections, with low cliffs towards the south, grading into dunes to the
north.

History
Scene of a 19th century life saving station associated with summer cottages, shacks and hotels, Nantasket Beach Reservation was established as a public beach in the 1899, and is best know for its association with the now-demolished Paragon Amusement
Park.

RESOURCES

Structures
On the beach stand: a large concrete Art Deco bathhouse scheduled for refurbishing; a long, wood framed, shed roofed, shoreside pavilion with an integrated bandstand; a small brown block, hip-roofed 1970s sanitary is near the beach's south end while a
flat roofed 1 story 1960s brick sanitary/field garage with associated wooden shelter and ship weathervane is on the north end. Several large parking lots, sections of concrete seawalls, some storm damaged, and rip-rap slopes also border the beach. The
MDC compound on the landside of Nantasket Avenue includes a collection of five clapboarded support buildings, ie, two small garages, two small workshops and a large 2 story, low-hip-roofed, porched "barracks" dating to the late 19th century, as well as
a stucco 2 story Mediterranean-esque police station and a one story, central cored, double winged multi-bayed red brick garage. A variety of arcade buildings, eateries and minor amusements flesh out the streetscape including a small, 1 story
mediterranean style sanitary with its accompanying tiled, gable-on-hip roofed clock-towered shop; the low, circular, helmet-roofed garage doored "Carousel under the Clock" and a miniature golf course.

Natural Features
Large, long, open ocean salt water beach (4200 ft owned by MDC, 15000 ft total) with a flat offshore slope and moderate tidal range; salt water vegetation, some small dunes, rocky sections.

Recreational Facilities
Beach, picnic area, small totlot for children.

Parkways
Nantasket Avenue is a busy, stand alone, beach bordering, main boulevard.

Viewsheds
Stunning view to open sea on the east (great sunrises while the 1-4-3 "I Love You" flash of Minot's Lighthouse is visible at night); flat sandy beach to the north; low rocky headlands to south and shore side commercial and amusement buildings to the
west, with a brick high-rise apartment complex towards the south. The adjacent Atlantic Ledges now support a stepped flight of condos.

Either 100 or 200 amps service to all MDC structures.

Small restaurants, two amusement centers across from beach. Short drive to downtown Hull; strip malls west on Route 3A.

SECURITY

Entry
Easy access to walkers, roadway adequate. Difficult to seal roadways in summer. Beach is seawall backed and can be sealed or secured as needed.
