Howell Research Room
GedCom Project Guidelines
If you are interested in submitting your GedCom to this project, the following guidelines are provided:
- Absolutely NO living persons are to be included in your GedCom.
- Your GedCom must be Howell(s), Howle or variant spelling-related and can be of any size. Please do not include your extended lines. You can, however, include the parents of spouses who marry into our surnames of interest.
- If you are not sure whether your surname qualifies for this project, please see the list of
names we research.
- Just for your information, I am currently using Personal Ancestral File (PAF) to import and export GedComs. Unfortunately, PAF is not compatible with everyone's GedComs and may throw numerous errors, particularly your notes. Take comfort in knowing I am searching for a genealogy program whose import/export process is compatible with many, many genealogy programs instead of just a few. Once done, I will change over and announce it to any project participants so you can resubmit a new GedCom to be processed under the new program.
- We have no provisions for each person to upload their own data. If you would like to submit a GedCom to this project, please send it to
me at in an email as an attachment. With the rampant viruses running through the Web, it is most appreciated if you would please send me an advance email letting me know your attachment will be coming.
- I am one person uploading the data to this project. Please be sure your data is correct as time constraints will not allow me to make corrections once the material is online.
- This database will be updated tri-annually during the months of February, June and October. If you have updates to your data, including your email address, please submit a new GedCom by email during the month previous to the one you want the update to show in (submit in January, May or September).
You should be aware that, although I will make every effort to ensure the availability and integrity of uploaded material, hardware and software failures within my own computer or at our host might cause data to be unavailable from time to time, or might even result in the corruption or catastrophic loss of data. The responsibility of safeguarding the original copies of your data lies solely with you, and you should not in any way regard the Howell Research Room as an archival storage facility.
