[103738] There has been uncertainty about the life of William Howell because ofthe presence in Hampshire County, Virginia and neighboring AlleganyCounty, Maryland of another William Howell who was born in New Jersey(perhaps in Morris County) about 1735 (one of his sons was old enoughto fight in the Revolutionary War), some of whose children weremarried in Hampshire County. Much information about the life ofWilliam Howell, son of Micah Howell, is found in his claim, S 2328,for a pension for Revolutionary War service. He stated in theapplication that he was born in New Jersey and lived there until hewas about twenty-four years of age, when he moved to Hampshire County,Virginia. He served in 1776 and 1777 one month each year in a companycommanded by Captain Okey Johnson (who resided on Patterson's Creek,Hampshire County),marched to Fort McIntosh on the Ohio River about 18miles below Fort Pitt where he was transferred to Captain VanSwearingen's company, advanced cross country to Tuscarawas, where theyhad an engagement with the Indians and was discharged February 26,1779. He enlisted sometime in April 1781 and served two months inCaptain Okey Johnson's company in pursuit of the Tories. He wasallowed a pension on his application executed 13 Oct 1832 at whichtime he was aged eighty-four years and was residing in Lee Township,Athens County, Ohio. according to depositions in a court caseinvolving land (Chalkley: Records of Augusta County, VirginiaII:91-92), William Howell was married to Eleanor Gilmore who was bornabout 1753. She was the daughter of John Gilmore who obtained a leaseof land on Patterson's Manor Creek, Hampshire County, on 14 May 1771.Eleanor had died before November 1796 when the depositions were taken.(Descendants of Edward Howell...2nd)
