A Tennessee Pioneer, Nathaniel Overall 1758-1835
p. 27, "John Overall was living in ShenandoahCounty Va in 1783, at the
time of the first census"
The family from which Nathaniel Overll was sprung was Saxon in Orgin and
seems to have two main characteristics as suggested by the family name, the
coat of arms, and the motto. Oveall in Saxon, manet "the family who dwells in
the hall by the shore of the sea"; the sea inspired a spirit of wanderlust;
they came from the Danish peninsula in England, and early from England to
American. The helmeted head and themailed fist, with the Norman-Fresch motto,
"tant Que je puis," were indicateive of the fighting, hard working folk whose
individual daily efforst seems to have been "to the limit of my ability.~"
In Enghaldn the family became best knownin in Church history, for the
intellectual ability and militant common senseof Bish John Overall, 1560-1619,
Regius Professor of Theology at Cambridge, later daen of St. Paul, London, and
bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, and of Norwich, successively. He was one of
the 47 transaltors of the King James Version of the Bible. Bishop Overall had
two brothers, William and Nathanile,; thethe three names, John, Willim, and
Nathaniel have been trasnsmitted without interruption in most Overall families
since 1560
In 1637 - Nathaniel saled from Kent to the Virginia Colong. William
Overall, ggg grandfather bough 990 acres of land in Westmoreland Co., Va
1661-1665.
