He worked in the Colorado mines at age nine to helpedfeed his family after his dad died. In the Korean war he was a chauffeur for one of the Generals
Back in the states my grandpa made a big name for himself inthe steel business. A trade he was in since 1913. Before he died, at age 84, he was believed to be the oldest active ironworker in the country. For 67 yearshe helped erect the iron frames of buildings in every state except Alaska. He erected the Genesse Towers in Flint, Michigan, one of the tallest buildings in Michigan. At age 73 he placed the beacon that sits atop the Towers, which can beseen from anywhere in the city. Other buildings in Flint include the YMCA, Michigan Bell Tele. Co. and every area factory. He also worked on the structure inHanford, Wash. where the first atomic bomb was built. I don't think he knew what would happen. He also helped build a water line from the Colorado River thatstill serves Los Angeles, to this day. Co-workers told how my grandpa would give all or part of his paycheck to help fellow workers who were having hard times. My grandpa said one of the hardest things for him to do was try to choose two or three men for the job out of the 40 or more who needed it. All this earnedmy grandpa the title of "Iron Man". Sister Billie, I thought it was very interesting that you, too, aredescended from Davy Crockett! It inspired me to reprint "Sockdolager," which Ihave been proudly publishing for more than 20 years. I'm not exactly sure whatmy relationship to Davy Crockett is? "Shirt-tail cousin," I think my aunt said.My dad's aunt was Cynthia Parker, mother of Quanah Parker, the great Comanchechief. The Parkers were the first to shed blood at Lexington in 1775. Captain Prescott, a hero of Bunker Hill is also among my forefathers, who have been at the forefront in fighting for Liberty & Justice.
