[93165] The best of the Stuart kings. His reign marked a period of peace and prosperity between 2 long times of war. The renaissance came to Scotland under his rule. One of the few kings to have learned gaelic and journeyed into the isles and highlands, he
met the clan chiefs on their ground, respectfully. His overtures were not well met, and he tried a feudal approach, giving their land over to 2 Lieutenants. There was an uprising against this, resulting in his establishing a series of strongholds
throughout the region to keep watch, much as the English had done to Wales. He married the 12year old daughter of the welsh Henry VII to cement a truce with England, but in support of France, led the most magnificent army ever gathered into England
1513. After a few weeks came the disaster of the battle of Flodden, where he refused to withdraw from a losing fight and the flower of Scottish chivalry was massacred. The best, youngest, and most powerful leaders of the country were destroyed in a
single day. 9 earls, 14 lords, many chiefs of the great clans, james son alexander (the leader of his many many bastard children), 3 powerful clerics, 2 heads of university.
