Upon the death of his father in 1625, Edward inherited Westbury Manorat Marsh Gibbon, a fine stone structure of the 16th century, whichhad been purchased by his grandfather in 1536, during the reign ofKing Henry VIII. On June 8, 1639, he sold the manor to RichardFrancis of Marsh Gibbon for 1,600 pounds. Later that same year, at theage of 55, he set out with his family for the "new world".
The first record we have of Edward Howell in the U.S. is the list offreemen of Boston, published on March 13, 1640. He received from KingCharles I of England a land grant of 500 acres at Lynn, MA, and hemoved there from Boston, but did not remain long there either. OnApril 17, 1640, Edward Howell was one of three proprietors whoobtained authorization to occupy eight miles square on any part ofLong Island, which was then a part of the Connecticut Colony. In Juneor July, the Howells landed at Southampton, Long Island, where theywere to stay.
Edward Howell is considered one of Southampton's founders, and heowned a large estate there. He served on the governor's council ofConnecticut from 1647 to 1653, and in 1647, Edward Howell was selectedto serve as a member of the legislature at Hartford, CT, and he heldthis position until his death.
Court records dated Oct. 6, 1655, granted Eleanore Howell all hisgoods.
