a cut-up, the 2nd of 7. red haired. 5'2", myopic, an excellent horsewoman. She was a playmate of President Grant's daughter Nellie in the White House. Once when spying on a reception in the white house from the top of a staircase, she fell asleep and
rolled down the stairs and onto the dance floor in her nightdress. On one ofher father's Indian missions west, she heard men commenting that no woman could climb Pike's Peak, so she did. She kept a diary of her train trip west.
She managed the construction of Grayhaven, and the running of the farm, for months at a time when Jamie was in Alaska. She had a beaded blanket from Princess Sarah Winnemucca who interpreted for Gen Howard during the Piute War of 1878. (it has been
given to a historical society) The painter Charles Eskine Scott Wood was best man at their wedding and gave them a large watercolor of an island on the Columbia. He was aide to Gen Howard and recorded Chief Joseph' "I will fight no more forever"
speech of 1877. In the summers of 1892-3 he sent his son Erskine to live with Joseph in his camps. She was a fearless woman. She rushed a surly Chinese cook who, having been fired, was threatening her with a butcher knife. She used a pistol to
drive a burglar from the house. She had cataracts and went blind, but continued her farm work even so. Once she baked a cake with a whole mouse in it, only discovered as it was cut at the table. Found of the Library Association of Portland, a Colonial
Dame, charter member of DAR, Founder of Women's Club, founder of Wednesday Art Class, and a promoter of Women's suffrage. She helped establish the YWCA. she was against tobacco. She spoke Latin, German, and French. She used a carved cowhorn to call
family for help, Grace's family living on a house on the property. She was a friend of Gov Martin, former army general friend of her father's.
In 1907 an Armenia family fleeling Turkish persecution came through Ellis Island to learn farming at Greyhaven. When asked about her beliefs, she responded she didn't know, but was eager to find out. Her last words were "How sweet is the night air"
