HISTORY OF CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, OHIO
Middleton, Vol l, pp 292
Census and family letters
Note by Grace Miller 1985
The legend is that a receipt for 250 pounds of beef furnished to the Armyby our Joshua was found. This established him as a patriot and as suchis listed in Vol II of the DAR Patriot Index.
Joshua Howell Sr, (the patriot) moved to ohio in 1808 with his wife Maryand family of eight children. He founded the town of Christiansburgwhich was named after their previous home in Montgomery County, VA. Theyare credited with putting out the first apple orchard in ChampaignCounty, Ohio, according to history books. In their later years, he andhis wife Mary moved to Indiana with one of their children and are buriedin Collins cemetery, Muncie, Indiana .
Their son, Joshua Howell Jr. had married Christina Mikesell in Virginiain 1800 and moved to Ohio with the family, thence to Michigan about 1830settling first in Bertrand where Joshua built and ran an inn, and lateron to Cass county, Michigan. About ten years earlier (ca 1820) theirdaughter Catherine had married Nathan McCoy(McCay on their tombstone) andfrom land records it appears they came to Michigan probably with herparents. All four are buried on the same lot in the Barron Lakecemetery, Howard twp, Cass County, Michigan. Nathan's stone is brokenoff and laying face down.
