HISTORY AND GENEALOGY by Miller: Capt. James Berry was wounded in Battleof Little Mt. or Estill'sDefeat. .....p.718: "His grandfather[Miller's?], James Berry, was wounded in the thigh in the battle ofLittle Mountain with Wyandotte Indians, in which his captain, JamesEstill, was killed, and Mr. Berry was carried off the battlefieldon theback of the slave negro Monk."
Also: "The aforesaid J. Thomas Berry, past 76 years of age, very activeand now deputy assessor, says his grandparents,James and Sarh Berry, were in the fort on Shallow Ford Creek and Wm. Berry, their eldest child, was b. in said fort sometime in 1783
Joyce: The exact date andplace of his birth are not known. From hispension application and that of hiswidow's we know that whe was married28 Mar. 1783 to Sarah Grubb in Lincoln Co.(possibly that part that laterbecame Madison Co.)
In a deposition (Ky. Recs. Vol. 2, p. 118) is stated that James Berry wasat Boonesborough in 1779. So he was in Ky. at least 4 years prior to hismarriage. In his pension application hestates that he resided inGreenbriar Co., VA, prior to the opening of the Revolution and that heenlisted 1777 from there, and that he had resided in Madison Co., KY,since the close of the Revolution. (If he was in Ky. in 1779, he waactually there prior to the close of the revolution which is consideredto be 1781.)He was the 'adventurer' of the family, being first to gowest.
