William was not engaged in the actual battle at San Jacinto, but was dispatched, along with other troops for guard duty at nearby Harrisburg. For his service during the Battle of San Jacinto during the Texas Revolution he was awarded a land grant of 640 acres in Walker County.
Sam Houston, who had settled in Huntsville visitedmany times in the BARKER home as he traveled the Old Colony Road between Dodgeand Huntsville.
