From _The History of Fresno County_ by Paul Vendor
The able blacksmith at the Hub, a little station on the Hardwick 7 Summit Lake Branch of the Southern Pacific RR, the next station to Riverdale, is James Patrick Farley, who came here in 1911 just when this RR was completed. He bought an acre lot and
built his blacksmith's shop, and nearby a comfortable dwelling, where he has lived ever since. He has bought another half acre which he may improve in time. He has worked at his trade with success, a matter of more than ordinary satisfaction, for
Uncle Jim not only came here to make a living and a home, but he was ambitious also to hlep build up the town. He does horse showing and general blacksmithing, and is now working on the auto truck, and tractor work and accessories in order to meet the
demands of the time. Uncle Jim carries with him the air of good cheer and whole heartedness a trait no doubt inherited from his ancestors of the Emerald Isle, where his paternal grandparents James and Mary Smith were both born, his maternal
grandfather Patrick was also from there. His father Philip was born soon after couple's arrival in America, and he became an operator in the woolen mills of the East and followed that trade until he moved west in 1886. He settled in Redding and tried
farming but being wholly unuse to agriculture and outdoor life, made no headway as a rancher and died 5 yrs after his arrival. He had bought 160 acres of land owned by the RR. His grandmother Maria Gray was the own sister of William H. Gray the
explorer of the the Columbia River and Gray's Harbor OR. James is the eldest of seven children, only 15 when his father passed away. This bereavement compelled him to push out into the world and help his mother and family. He did what his hands found
to do, and engaged at the gold mines at Calument and Harriosn Bulch, Old Diggings and other places, principally in Shasta Co. CA. In OR he worked mines adjacent to Grant's Pass and prospected 50 mi south of there to Crescent City CA. Being handy with
tools and having a liking for the smithy, James began as a helper around the blacksmith shops in Shasta Co. and grew into the trade sharpening tools, shoeing horses, building and repairing machinery, and doing a thousand and one things necessary around
gold mining camps. When he came to the new town of Hub, he was a competent workman and a godsend to the community. His sister, Mrs. Charles Montgomery was living nearby and was the means of calling his attention to this fertile dairy district. Jim
married at Grant's Pass to Miss Edna McManus, whom he met while lodging at her mother's boarding house, a native of Missouri, and then went to Redding where their oldest son Philip was born.
