Abner Howell

 

Abner Howell was born April 16, 1826, and died August 07,1885 and is buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery route 654, west of Blue Ridge Parkway, in Vinton, Virginia. He married to (1) Eunice Davidson April 9, 1848 in Bedford County, Virginia by the Reverend Lunsford, surety: Meredith Davidson (father). From this marriage they had nine children. He married Mary Jane Hunter Foster 1873 in Bedford County, Virginia. From this marriage two children were born. He married Mary E. Cooper April 16, 1884 in Franklin County, Virginia daughter of Caleb Cooper and Nancy Webb Cooper.

Abner Howell was one of the Trustees of the Blue Ridge Church, three miles east of Vinton, Virginia that was build in 1852. He and the earlier members of his family are buried in this old cemetery.

The "Howell School House" opened in the early 1860’s in a one-room building. It was demolished but later a new two-room schoolhouse was constructed. (This new building burned May 2001) Across the road from the school was Howell’s chapel at the fork of Howell’s and Landon Hill Roads.
